'New' old laptop
My daughter decided she needed a new laptop and passed her old one along to me.
It's an HP DV6000 running Win XP. I'm going to be using it mainly as a mobile repository for pictures once I get it all set up. My problem right now is that the battery goes dead in about an hour with light usage. So, where do I get the best bang for my buck battery wise? I've looked quickly at Amazon and see there's an 8800mh one for @$30, while others are cheaper and smaller at 5500mh. Is this a pure and simple case of bigger is better, ie longer life before recharge? Thanks for any advice. I've been using my son's old Dell Inspiron, but only with the A/C plugged in. This new(er) HP has a card slot that'll make it simpler to download pictures, I hope, and I'm looking forward to making use of it out in the field.

Larger mh equals more storage.
Is there any chance of getting a virus on that machine from connection to the source? If so, XP ain't the best option.

I am still doing XP with Firefdox as browser and Avira as protection. So far no problems with surfing the internet.

I've had that model of HP before. Don't expect much more out of a new battery. Can you just leave it plugged in while using it?
I also have no problems with XP and Firefox on 2 of my older computers.......

Original spec for this laptop is 2hrs 35min battery life when new. HP Pavilion dv6000 review - CNET You may get better with a new higher capacity battery. The downside is going to be XP and the hard drive. This laptop is roughly 8 years old and most hard drives start to get flakey at that time or before with moderate use. I would get a nice 32gig thumb drive to back up any files of value just a precaution.
I have found good batteries on both Amazon and Ebay for my ibooks. Just look at either the buyer comments (Amazon) or the seller ratings (Ebay.)

More mAh does equal longer run time.
The biggest improvement I have found for old laptops is to replace the HDD with a solid-state drive and add RAM. Regular backups are important! It does look like others have had some success getting Windows 7 to run on that particular model: Windows 7 Upgrade Guide for dv6000/dv9000 models - HP Support Forum - 179816 |

Thanks for all the input guys!
In keeping this a low budget operation, I think I'll just make use of the power inverter I got a few years ago from my nephew when I'm using this computer. I don't want to invest any money in it since it is 8 yrs old. If I can get it to work well enough for me to check pictures while out and about, that'll do just fine. I won't be counting on it for any type of permanent storage either so that is not a problem. The main use will be to check focus on pictures. My eyes aren't good enough, even with my glasses on, to check them on the camera LCD. I figure I can open the files on this and look at them on a 'real' screen to see if I got it right. I really appreciate your taking the time to reply. Happy New Year to you all.

+1 on the SSD. It can really wake up an older computer -- particularly a laptop which was often saddled with a 5400rpm drive.

Windows XP? Yuck...
Wipe it and re-install. A Solid State Drive would be a worthy improvement, but you may not get the best results because the OS and hardware won't support all the features of the SSD. I would suggest reading both of these write-ups: - How to optimise Windows XP for SSD - SSD Tweak Guide But definitely a fresh install. Who knows what the hell is installed on it.
