Weird fraudulent Walmart/PayPal charges

So last night I was reading in bed and at 11:44 I got (5) text messages from my Citi card for (5) Walmart purchases, each in the $30-$35 range. I have all my credit cards set to send a text notification on any purchase. My wife was downstairs watching TV and I just figured she had bought some stuff online. At the time I didn't question the (5) separate transactions.

This morning I noticed (5) emails from Walmart and (5) emails from PayPal all timestamped 11:44. I asked my wife if she had made any purchases and she said no. Each Walmart order confirmation email had a different shipping address, all within 100 miles of me. I logged into my Walmart account and looked at the (5) orders, two for cat food, one for toilet paper, one for a mixer, and one for a blender.

I was able to cancel three of the orders but the other two would only go to "cancelation pending" status. I immediately changed both the Walmart and PayPal accounts to 2-step authentication and removed PayPal and my CC from the Walmart "wallet".

I talked to someone at Walmart (probably in India) and they said they would put my account into some sort of an elevated security status and somehow earmark the two "cancelation pending" orders to not be delivered. They must have progressed further into the fulfillment process where they have to be handled differently.

How would someone have made these purchases and what would be the goal considering the apparently random shipping addresses?

It's unfortunate that there's people out there that have the skills and time for this kind of crap.

I'd make sure to reset my email password as well!

You know it's time consuming considering they don't want/need the merchandise and have to sell it on.

You should dispute the charges with your credit card, as well.

Certainly weird considering the value of the items "second hand".

This and you're covered under Federal US law.

Don’t be make a few small dollar purchases to see if the card is good, then purchase the high dollar items? At least that’s what I read on the inter-web.
