??? what happened ???

Wild fires down under

sc_rufctr 01-04-2015 04:25 PM

I'm fine. I live in the Western Suburbs so we're a long way from the fires. Thanks for asking.

A lot of my friends weren't though. They had to evacuate but they're returning now. Some to burnt out ruins.
Sadly lots of live stock, horses, and pets lost. Things still aren't clear but it could have been so much worse.

I'll try to get some photos up soon.

Whoa, wildfires are such an unmanageable overwhelming force of nature, super scary too. Glad that you and your family are ok. Sorry to hear about your friends that did not make out so well, tell them we are thinking about them and hoping that things work out for them in the recovery.

Aloha Richard

So sorry to see this.

Bill Douglas 01-04-2015 07:24 PM

Very sad for everyone.

Worst fire in your area for over 20 years I believe.

I feel for all the animals. Koala bears can't run and stock in fenced paddocks are prisoners to the flames.

That's all true Bill but a lot of work has been done since "Ash Wednesday" (16 February 1983. I remember this clearly because I was 17 at the time)
So far no loss of human life has been reported but during "Ash Wednesday" 28 people died and as a consequence a lot of mandatory safety measures have been put in place.

Meanwhile... The fire is still burning but our CFS (Country Fire Service) are doing a great job.

Horrible news, glad you're ok. SmileWavy

I bet that 944 had something to do with it.

john70t 01-05-2015 07:48 AM

Sorry to hear about that.
California was once removing eucalyptis trees because of their fast burn rate.

livi 01-05-2015 10:22 AM

Truly awful to see. Glad you are OK!

dewolf 01-05-2015 11:53 AM

This was only a few miles from where I live. Had to help a friend evacuate 2.00am Saturday morning. Some areas of the fire was travelling along the ground at 40kmh. BIL is a volunteer fire fighter and is still up there. Rain is forecast for tomorrow so hopefully they get the forecast right this time.

Good luck. Last night's TV said you guys in Adelaide area were going to get 38 c. and rain on the east coast only.

Was the Motor Museum affected?

Thankfully, the museum at Birdwood is untouched but some of the surrounding areas have been affected.

Thank you all for your concern. The fire is still burning but the CFS hopes to have it out by Wednesday.

This is cool... From our local paper.

The little house that could! Astonishing before and after shots of an Inglewood home that withstood the bushfire.
Thanks to Wendy Smith for sending these images in.
