Not my best day.
I was working on the 65 in the shop and went into take a crap....and maybe watch a little football. Bout an hour later I returned to the shop to find it smoke filled.
I'm bummed. .......http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421075187.jpg |
aaaahhh crap. Sorry to hear this
|
That sucks!! What happened??
|
What caught fire?

"Not your best day" but It could have been so much worse.
Chin up! |
Definitely not your best day, but this could have been much worse... That lovely car could have burned to the floor or your house could have burned down.
This is minor. angela |
Ouch! Good thing it was confined to the car.
|
I was doing some welding & grinding. Masking paper on the trunk flange & 2 big towels laying over the rear window. I did turn off the light before I left but some errant spark got something smoldering, I guess....I didn't go thru my usual check list ( been fabbing stuff out there for about 15 years) before leaving.
I got "lucky". There are enough flammable solvents out there to blow the shop off the map.....but I keep them away from the immediate work area. The gas tank is out of the car.....just a small victory for Murphy. |
I burned one to the ground once. Like stated, could have been much worse. My buddy lit one, and it burned his parents house down. He was never allowed to work on cars on their property again .
I was lucky, built the car in my parents garage, got it running , but my brand new holley was leaking fuel . I pulled the car outside overnight. When I went to fire it up the next morning, it backfired, and whoof! Burnt to the ground in the driveway, but saved the house . I had a fire extinguisher, but the gas fire laughed at it. This was a really, clean and fast 77 with a built large journal 327. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421079026.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421079037.jpg |
Sorry to see that.

Lesson learned, no halogen in house. Fire dept said they cause a lot of fires. The gas in a bulb is over 2,000 F degrees. When the lamp fell over the bulb exploded and the glass shards ignited the fire. Check out these new magnetic LED rechargeable lights. I have a few of them and they are great. If I find a link I will post it. |
uff-da. That's the suck.
|
Sorry to see this. I always worry about my Halogen shop light. Need to pick up one of the new LED shop lights before I have a similar story.
|
Ya got lucky for sure buddy! Just a reminder to us all to check and double check before we leave the work area!

JP, you're still vertical, right?
That's a good thing. You still got yer family? That's a good thing. You still got yer friends? OK maybe not ya old coot but ya still got me. Do you still have the shop? Well it's a hundred times better than my shop and I hate you for it. And ya obviously have a roof over yer haid to watch fooseball ........ and ya prolly gots food in the fridge to snack on ..... Doesn't sound to me like you got it so bad. Lotsa folk would be glad to switch places. It's just an old furd and you can fix it. Yer dad was a TV repairman and you got the ultimate set of tools. Now iffn you gots all burned up that would really suck. Be careful man!!!!!!! Tanks. |
GM products will do that, they after all are not Porsches.
|
Looks like you can save the car. What are the actual damages ?
|
JP,
So glad it wasn't worse. I came close about 14 years ago when I first got the old E. PO had a fellow strip off the MFI and put on carbs. I had the car trucked to my place and was sorting it out. One day I had to move it out of the garage. Getting it to go was a bit of a chore and when I got it parked in the yard, the smell of gas was bad. I opened the deck lid and was not happy to see gas running from the fuel lines at the front of the engine compartment. One would almost think actually tightening the clamps on gas line connections would be part of the install procedure but I guess everyone works differently. It wasn't long after that a fire extinguisher was mounted . Play Safe! Best Les |

It must have been quite a crap. That car is a mess. In all seriousness, pleased you are OK. . |
Sorry about the setback, JP.
Hope this doesn't make you mad, I just thought a little levity might help about now? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1421104401.jpg |
JP that really sucks. I liked the direction you were going with your Mustang project, hopefully this is just a temporary setback.
|
Switched all my work/shop lights to LED. Work just as well and no heat.

Now I need a good body shop or painter in the Vancouver WA/Portland OR area. Since half the car needs a repaint nohow, I might as well change it to a color I really like (tho the white was growing on me, old Wimbelton White would be beach to match)......I luv black early Mustange. I know of one good shop just down the street but I dunno if they're up for this. Any referals? |

The Halogens are bulky and seem to always be where you need to stick your head. They get way hot too. |

(yellow furds are faster) Serial, iffn re-sale value has anything to do with it go with the obvious: 1) shelby racing blue with white stripe 2) really get crazy and go for white with a shelby racing blue stripe. 3) totally sell-out and go with bullett green. Whatever ya do, please don't douche-out and copy eleanor. I hate that stupid car and it's 250,000 clones. |

So was Darwin. The door knob wasn't hot, so I didn't notice the smoke till I opened the door. The air in the shop wasn't hot but the smoke was blinding thick.....I stumbled across the shop (holding my breath) & opened the big door......a list of DON'Ts that I violated. I'd rather be lucky than good. |

Install kits for quarter windows are available (not close to Porsche prices) but a PITA to install. They are on my bucket list. |
I bought a couple of these LED work lights recently. Cheap and work well.

Glad it was not worse. Guy in our Porsche club burned down his garage and the rare and expensive Alfa inside it with a combination of oiled rags and a hot work light. At least I think that was the combination. The only plus side was it got him into his first Porsche.
|
Lucky it was confined to the area.
Idea: smoke/carbon dioxide detector in the garage. When I was just out of college, I was visiting a shop in my hometown where they worked on furrin cars. The guys were setting cam timing on an Alfa GTV. They had it in reverse and were bumping it to turn the engine ever so slightly. Unfortunately, they had pulled the battery and set it behind the car. They gradually rolled the car back and, unseen, touched both battery posts to the underside of the gas tank. Whoosh! 30-foot fireball ensued. Not a happy day. |
JP:
Sorry for the bum luck. Looks like you will have a cool build when done. I have always liked those early 'stangs. |
Glad you're ok. Not a bad day really, could have been much worse and now you have a reason to change the car bit.
|
Today is a better day. The 65 is back home......that's the good news.
The engine quit at a stop light and the starter drive took a puke.....came home on the hook. Did get a pic, tho. ...... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1430787259.jpg |

Looks great!
Saw one just like that south of Charleston SC a few weeks ago. I'd be tempted to tint the windows some. Quote:
