Sold this door, first packed in one box, and then packed that box into another box, final dimensions 57x36x13 inches thick.

Shipped it via UPS, $1500 insured.

Always insure, always take pics of the box.

Would be interested in how everything eventually shakes out on the insurance claim, Shaun.

That looks like it could be a candidate for one of those dent wizard procedures but I'm not an expert in body work.

Shaun, having just done some very fine business with you, I have a small amount of advice based on one too many screw-ups with UPS....go FedEx Ground.

They are not perfect, but their gorillas are slightly less abusive than UPS, they seem more reliable at pick up/delivery and so far, I have never had a lost or damaged package.

It is good enough that I do not take insurance on any of their shipping...which saves some dough for sure.

Last time I shipped something large, I built a wood crate and shipped it with Greyhound.

Thanks Dennis, with your packing, even UPS couldn't damage your excellent struts. :) I consider myself a very good packer so am surprised at this. I ship around $30K of Porsche parts a year and have very few problems. Years ago, someone at UPS needed an early heat exchanger though. I shipped a pair to Atlanta, somewhere along the way someone opened the box, took out one side, sealed it up nicely and delivered only the other side.

I switched to UPS years ago when FedEx lost one of 4 .06 wheels I sent to Harvey Weidman. They were insured but still.

Buyer says it looks like a forklift punctured the box. It must have and then pressed it up against a wall.

Buyer is working on this but I'm going to ask if there's any kind of video/pictures of the box along the way. I want to know where this happened.

I do that with transmissions but still ship UPS. This 915/73 went to LA for $115. I don't trust Greyhound with anything over $500.

It has been quite a while since I shipped anything. Awfully nice to have John Walker host a swap meet every year not too far from me.

Must be nice just to have John Walker not far!

I've had similar luck with fedex. They all suck.


Trying shipping 50k worth of signs! The big freight companies don't treat stuff any better.

I shipped a windshield from here to California via Grey Hound and it arrived perfect. Their stuff goes point to point where it's hand transferred to the next bus. Little chance someone can poke it with a forklift.

I haven't had UPS or Fedex damage anything beyond repair, but a freight company did manage to lose an the headboard to our king sized bed once. I have no clue how you manage to misplace something like that or what someone would want with just that *one* piece but it never showed up.

My theory is that someone damaged it badly and then made it "disappear." At least the bed was only a few months old so a replacement could be made.

Just last week I came home and noticed a package on my front porch. I never have stuff sent to my house because it is easier to have it shipped to my office. We have someone here to sign for it.

Anyway I look at the package and it was a computer generated 100% legible proper label for a business that is two miles from my house. Next to the label the shipper had printed was a UPS generated address label with my address on it.

The business had a address like 5000 S. Broadway. My address was the equivalent of 5000 NE 150th. The number part of the address was the same but my street is a east-west street and the correct business address is a north-south street.

The business is a place I know so I called them. They sent one of their employees over to pick it it up. I have no affiliation at all with that company. I have been in that store as a customer but I visit many businesses.

I can only guess the driver forgot to drop it off when he was on the proper part of the route so he just whipped up a new label and left it at my house.

I shipped on a pallet a 45US gallon drum of bacteria concentrate worth thousands of dollars last year, and receiver of goods at the truck's earlier port of call put a forklift tine through the drum, and then taped up the hole after goodness knows how much liquid had flowed out. The remainder was probably contaminated from the dirty forklift tine anyway.

UPS drivers can not whip up a label - they do not have the equipment - to my knowledge neither can FedEx drivers. Double lables happen...... When I reuse a box I either remove the old label or make sure I deface it 100% so there is no chance it is mistaken for the correct label.
