I'll admit to a bias right up front, as after I sold the old E, I got a first year Miata.
If that's not enough power, you can turbo the thing. If that's not enough power, you can shoehorn in a V8! As is they're a nice handling, easily wrench-able car. Best Les |
Before Porsches, I had a slew of 240Zs, 280Zs, and 280ZXs, my favorite was a blue 71 just like RacerBVDs pic above in the thread. The main problem with Z cars is the rust, and until the ugly 84 300ZX came out, they ALL had rust of some sort. I remember one time I was trying to get a 280ZX turbo for $500 that had been sitting next to the guy's garage for a few years. Every spot I tried to tie onto to to winch it onto my 2 wheeled car dolly would break off because of rust. I fianlly ended up leaving it and not buying because I feared it would fall in half going down the turnpike.
I would love to get another rust free 240Z and install a Rebello stroker motor in it with about 300 HP, and have a really cool sleeper/cruiser. |
I just inherited a 3rd gen 1993 RX7 twin turbo.
A few impressions: I find the car has held up well style-wise. This one is grey/black, no bling at all. Very simple and appealing to the point where I have a new found appreciation for the lines and overall impression the car gives off. Small interior. If my wife doesn't start to enjoy driving it (she has zero interest in cars and is a bit intimidated by the car...it is fast) I'll probably sell it since there is no combination of seat position/recline that gets my head unencumbered from the overhead. Fast. Eerily fast. The car pulls effortlessly in every gear, incredibly composed with just the right exhaust note. No must, no fuss: some might say "soulless", which I'm good with. The shifter is on the center console in what I came to view as the perfect position. It becomes very natural and intuitive. Handling is the equal of the cars speed, completely balanced and uncomplaining. There are a lot of websites devoted to the RX7, especially what to look for in a PPI. There are also some recommendations for minor upgrades that address some daily driver improvements. If I fit in the thing, I'd keep it. It really is a hoot, a very fast, competent hoot. |

There are some great 914 deals out there. $5k to $7K buys a lot of car these days.

I cannot believe what the classic car market is doing. Crazy! I had not really considered a 914 but it looks like there are still some deals out there. I am trying to stick with the cars which inspired me in my youth. However, it does seem like a Boxster or 996 is the best bang for the buck. I kind of like the idea of a 70's era car with carbs, something more simple and with some soul. Keep it coming! |
I recently made the switch from Porsche to a Mustang. There is a serious adjustment to be made......one needs to knock off several points off your IQ to deal with those folks.....from social media thru to suppliers.
I shoulda' stuck with Porsches where I could remain one of the dumber segment in the crowd.....my lowly education ( HS graduate) put them Mustang folks at a serious disadvantage. |

I am bias but a 80 Celica GT was my first car, so that's the car I love to have or restore or mod if I have the time and the space but the MR2 will be the first on my list then an older celica (77?) with a hot motor would fit the bill. The 240 would come after that. They are all fun little cars but a little under power. If another 50hp can be added without major work, then those cars are golden.

Gonna go out on a limb here. I really liked the BMW 318 ti. Tthey are becoming a bit of a cult car but I bought mine stepdaughter 1 and it was a hoot of the little car. If I could find one and slip in an m3 motor or even a 2.5 liter motor it would be a killer sleeper car. Very light and tossable.
if I were going for a first generation rx7 I would go with the SE model with the 13 b rotary over the 12 a. |
