Anyone else like the deleted center console look?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1412674735.jpg

I can’t explain why that center console delete looks so innately pleasing to me.
The juxtaposition of bucket seats with connected leg room area?
The way the passenger and drivers side become one? Larger expanse of one space?
Stylistically, a case of “less is more”. Less busy. Less clutter. Clean.

I like the lower dash also....(no glovebox door, no heater controls, no radio, etc) Door panels are also simplified.

wdfifteen 01-30-2015 04:41 AM

I like it. The console was not well integrated in the 911. It looks tacked on, like an afterthought.

Shaun @ Tru6 01-30-2015 04:44 AM

That car has a Hargett shifter.

The early impact bumper sport seats are nice but the formed Al cover running across the dash detracts.

Scuba Steve 01-30-2015 04:49 AM

Generally, not so much. It reminds me of the Delta 88 that was my first car. However, a bad console that's a complete afterthought reminds me of the same car with the transmission hump cupholder console that she bought at Wal Mart.

herr_oberst 01-30-2015 04:50 AM

That's a very clean and tidy job...the rug really ties the cockpit together.

That shifter is going to get very hot and very cold.

OffCamber00 01-30-2015 04:52 AM

I have a Hargett - it definitely gets freakin cold. But it doesn't heat up that much.

GH85Carrera 01-30-2015 04:57 AM

It does not look bad, but it would not work for my car and my needs. I have working A/C and power door locks. I use the cubby hole on road trips. I could not get rid of mine, but that is my car and my needs.

It is your car, it looks good and I hope you like it. Nice work.

onewhippedpuppy 01-30-2015 06:31 AM

I love simplicity.

The console in those 911s looks tacked on because it is. Ever remove one? It's basically a standalone console screwed to the floor.

I like the GT3 console delete on the newer cars as well. Someday I want to do a lightweight hot rod 986 or 996, a modern take on the RS concept. Lightweight manual seats, radio delete, RS style door panels with cloth pulls, stripped trunk, lightweight wheels, etc. All starting with a simple base model car. I suspect a 2500 lbs 986 could be easily had, the 1997 models were only about 2750 stock.

legion 01-30-2015 06:46 AM

You'd need to replace the buckets with a bench to complete the look.

Ayles 01-30-2015 08:20 AM

I dig it! In fact, i just installed that Rennline dash! My center console is long gone.

I agree, the lower cover on the dash that looks powder coated is good too, cleans it up.

Every "luxury" in my 88 seems tacked on. The wiper delay, the left-right for the electric mirrors, the cruise, the sunroof switch, (even the heat controls.) The console is no different, but I won't change it just because I think it's pretty handy to have, and I want to keep mine stock, but that's me, and everyone should do what makes them happy!

Rick Lee 01-30-2015 08:34 AM

I did it as soon as I removed the a/c.

I grew up with cars from an older period. You could open the hood and see the ground and had mostly plenty of room to reach things that needed work. They also had bench seats and no center console. I like the open feeling of not having a center console. My '67, '72, and current '69 don't have consoles. My wife's car (2012 sport type model) has a center console and sport type seats. When I drive it I feel like I've been stuffed into a cocoon. I'm just more comfortable with the feeling of having more space.

Not having AC in PHX must really suck. Do you just park the car for part of the year?

I was tempted to install the GT3 console delete that Matt mentioned but I really like the parcel shelf for my phone and wallet. Still tempted though.

Deschodt 01-30-2015 08:55 AM

I like it too, cleaner.. Only downside is the passenger can now mess with the gas pedal ;-)
I like it so much I also removed it on my bmw 2002.

arcsine 01-30-2015 09:04 AM

Hated it. Removed AC and it and never looked back.

Yes! Love the no console look! I removed the one I had in the 930. The 993 has the console a little too integrated to bother with removal. Not mine, but some faves:

That was also my question.

Read A/C delete -> check user's location -> "Wow, Arizona???!"

I sold that SC in VA before I moved to AZ and got every single penny back I had put into it. If didn't need a/c so badly in AZ, I'd ditch the 993 for an older model. This is the 993 center console, though I've since swapped it out for a black one for a cool contrast.

Except for the 5 gauge pod the OP's dash looks exactly like a standard 914.
In the appearance group 914 the console is just a screw in console as well. I like the console look but as a tall guy I hate my leg and foot up against the console.
I got my 914 without a console, I installed a console and liked the look, but when I installed my Rennshift I didn't put it back in.
I'm debating about whether to reinstall it, with my /6 conversion almost done I could use the console for some extra gauges.
Still on the fence.

A930Rocket 01-30-2015 05:33 PM

I installed a radio delete panel in my 930 and moved the AC controls to the radio delete panel. I listened to the engine, not the radio. Worked great.

I like it. One of those mods that is subtle, but really isn't if you know what was there.

I took mine out. It's so much roomier and simpler in there with the thing gone. The newest cars have you completely wedged into a small slot, surrounded by a huge console. I hate that. New Porsches included.

I vow to only buy old cars without consoles from now on, if I can get away with it. For real. I'm prepared to have a solid old car totally re-manufactured in order to avoid the acres of plastic garbage that are foisted off on us these days.

LaneS 02-18-2015 01:08 PM

I love the look of the center console delete and I like the ergonomics of it. It gives your knees more room and makes the cabin feel less claustrophobic.

Just about everything on the dash and console of a 911 all the way to 1989 was an afterthought. :D

Whoa, now that is a clean carpet !
Let's see the garage or workshop if it's that caliber of OCD!

kach22i 02-20-2015 09:02 AM

How much does the typical center console weigh?

By modern standards the console and shifter assembly are rather industrial looking.

To me they are just purposeful, no gimmickry.

sand_man 02-20-2015 09:58 AM

For me, it wasn't weight savings , it was aesthetics. I just like the more open look; decluttered.

sand_man 02-20-2015 10:03 AM

You know, I was just thinking (scary), but I cut my teeth on early VW Beetles (1950s and mid-1960s), and that might explain why I like the lack of a "console"...just the shifter sticking out of the floor, please.

nicely done.

DaveE 02-20-2015 11:16 AM

Yeah I took the one out of my SC as well. No AC so it just became a junk collector.
