I agree about the last semi-Dead shows, nothing to get excited about.

Despite that, we are sending in our mail order on Tuesday and are planning a trek up to Chicago. Going to do all 3 shows.

Hoping for a memorable time with Trey playing lead and Hornsby banging on the keys.

If it were in say, Eugene, I might consider putting my hat in the ring for cheap seats, but a trip to Chicago makes it easy enough to say "not this time" to the Fare Thee Well tour.

I was at the run on shows at RFK, before the ones in Chicago in '95 and I agree with JWW and Randy, while no one can replace Jerry, I did really enjoy a Ratdog show back in '02 at a tiny venue here in Colorado. I have seen every iteration of The Dead over the years with the different guest joining.

My mail order is all ready to send in this week, having enjoyed seeing Phish over the years (some shows more than others) and Hornsby a number of times including this fall, these shows could be worth seeing as long as the right expectation is taken into them.....

Further is sad. However, the set Trey played with them last year was reasonably hot. Won't be a Grateful Dead show, but it will be better than the carryover bands.

I agree Greg.

Both my children really like listening to the Grateful Dead and I wish they were just few years older so they could go just to hear the music.

Check out Dark Star Orchestra. I have seen them 3 times and it's a good time. Worth checking out if you're looking for a Dead fix.

This may be blasphemy (OK, this IS blasphemy), but they sound better than the Dead did in the late 80's, 90's.

The wife and I stumbled upon a Dead show while traveling in the states early 90's in our VW westy bus. I still remember pulling into the campground and the lady saying in a southern drawl "Ya all here fur the Dead".
I was like WTF is the Dead?

The deadheads loved our westy, even though it looked out of place because it was restored near perfect. They got talking to us and had extra tickets so we went.

The crowd tailgate party/bazaar before the show was way better than the show itself.
Same venue had a huge Honda Goldwing convention going on the same time, those people were just freaking about all the damn dirty hippies walking around their bikes.
The band was quite old and static, not what I'd call amazing.
In fact it was watching those loons in the crowd that was awesome

Saw the Dead in Boulder, August 73. They were just back from the famous Europe 72 concert tour. Got a free ticket because that is what deadheads do with extras, pay it forward. Great show. I can still remember sitting in the UofColorado football stadium enjoying the view of the mountains when the "refreshments" provided by the band showed up. Now that was a good day/

This past August, I moved to a new home. While packing I found a decades old box filled with ticket stubs, photos, and all sorts of trinkets. I counted the stubs, 126 shows with Jerry, 17 JGB Shows. I am sure I lost a few along the way too.

I filled out my envelopes for mail order today. I will go with reasonable expectations. I don't expect to hear the past, but I will enjoy that end of what’s left.

Here is one of my old Trading badges from when I had a seat on the AMEX back in the late 1990's. Good old Dark Star Trading was once a very profitable company! I did a lot of road shows back in those days. The road was a lot easier in those days since I was making a living. Back in high school going on the "road" meant sleeping in the Ford Fairmont wagon which I got to borrow from my parents. In college I upgraded myself to a 1980 Suby GL Wagon. The all wheel drive wagon was perfect for getting out of the mud covered lots in Alpine Valley after a nasty storm..... Ah the good old days.

I was on the exchange floor when the news of Jerry's death came across the tape. Right up on the huge live news board, in the days before the internet was really big. I stood around for an hour and then left the floor to head up to my office. Sat around and lamented all the great things that would never happen again.

What a waste. Here was a man who had a huge following of loyal fans yet he chose to surround himself with enablers, who leached off of him and contributed to his death. I was initially saddened by his death and then annoyed that something I enjoyed so much would never happen again because of scourge of drugs. I am not so innocent, I have had my own bouts with substance abuse (not to the depth of Garcia). I also looked around and saw what I was missing and thankfully had the drive to put them aside.

I am looking forward to going to the shows. I love Chicago having spent time on the CME as a trader. I go with an open mind and just to enjoy the last breath of a once great experience.

Howard-great post...not quite as many shows as you, but probably lots of the same...11-12-91 with Jerry, one of my all timers, 3 Van songs and Jerry still sounding like 1990; or that incredible Spring 93 run in Philly or, or...

Duc's, Porsche's, Jerry, its amazing the common ties on this board.

Greg,

We'll have to meet up in the spring. I ride with a good group. A bunch of us are taking the California Super Bike Class 1 at NJ Motor Sports Park in may. I also do some very early Sunday morning drives with a couple of other Porsche buddies. You're welcome and encouraged to come. All air cooled guys, well at least with the cars.

This is the stub from one of my last shows. I must have missed putting it back in the box and I found it on the floor in my old house when I moved and just tucked it in my wallet. The last three shows I saw were all at the Spectrum. I got section 102 row 4 for the first night, lower bowl for the second and section 102 row 11 for the third, all from mail order. Best I ever did from mail order. Typically I don't care where I sit but it sure was nice to have such good seats.

This stub is a MSG show, IIRC it was lower level side stage.

Don't be bitter; just ask yourself, "How would Jerry handle this disappointment" (HWJHTD)

Try getting tickets for Burning Man. I feel your pain. Never got the chance to see the Dead w Jerry. Would have liked to.

Got my return envelope with a photocopied note which said "bummer for you" and my postal money orders back.

Oh well, I'll have to see what the secondary market looks like.
