Searching for a particular post / picture (Dark sky park)
 

A long time ago, someone posted a picture of a starry landscape and said that he stayed in a hotel not far from that location.

I'd like to say it was Monument Valley, but my memory has failed me.

Anyway, I'm kind of wanting to visit a dark sky park or a similar environment next weekend and am trying to find the post for some inspiration.

Thoughts?

Wow, those are amazing pics. I honestly never knew you could see the Milky Way, that's crazy ish!

We stayed at a little motel just outside of Monument Valley. It was in Mexican Hat, UT. When we stayed there it was the only hotel around. We had reservations and it was a good thing because the place was full. It is on the front door of Monument Valley.

Be careful driving around the 4 corners region at night, 'specially Friday and Saturday nights. (based on personal experience).

Creative camera work for sure, but in my yoot I spent hundreds of hours staring up at those stars through the glass of a station wagon (in back), it is like nothing I've ever seen anywhere else.
On a good night you can see "clouds of stars".

He should check the lunar calendar, caint see as many stars on the night of a full moon in the desert, but it does light the place up well enough to go midnight hiking and see everything.

Dis brings back memories, drove over that bridge a hundred times heading to beautiful downtown shiprock. it's rivitted, back before they welded stuff. I can still hear the funny rythmic noise the tires made going over the bumps on that bridge.

And I just checked the lunar calendar. Moon should be waning around that time. It should be less than a half moon.

I know it ain't PC, I know it's stereotypical, I know it will most likely O'fend someone, but it is true.
That entire area is made up of reservations. The navajo reservation is the biggest and had the worst rep.
My brothers and I would compete to see who could spot the most trucks in ditches the next morning to win the game.
Upside down trucks were worth double. On some trips we'd spot 20 or 30.

Until recently, the reservation police did not share records with the state police. It was possible for a resident of a reservation to have a dozen or more DUI convictions and still have a licence.

The murder rate on the reservation is also 4 times the national average.

Sammy, what is that? Sure looks like an ancient volcano. They are all over west Texas. The cone which is sedimentary rock has long since weathered away while the more weather resistwnt igneaous rock which would have formed by the cooling magma has remained. I bet that is some typ of basalt.

I believe those formations are sandstone and clay. The sandstone keeps it from eroding away as fast as the surrounding soil
