VW experts, opinions on this bug

Wife wants a bug really, really bad... super impractical for our needs so probably won't buy but this is being offered near us.
First concern is why is the front end so high?
Second concern is price seems kinda low, sign on the car says "runs good" but all used cars have that on their for sale signs.
What think ye?

Personally, I would go 66 or earlier.

The front end sits high because it's a super beetle

You should buy her my '56 Karmann Ghia instead

^^^^Agreed. I never found anything likable about the super turd. I prefer the 5-lug cars.

Going by the pics only that looks OK but I'd guess it hasn't been used regularly for a while.
The high front end is kind of weird but I can't imagine it being expensive to put right.

These old girls are a pretty safe bet and as you know most parts are still available either OEM or aftermarket.

Is $3,400 expensive for a Dub in the US? Same car in Aus would be closer to $7,000.

Also... Is this a Mexican made?

Flat-windshield = 71/72 so it's German.

What's the interior look like? The front end can be fixed, and not too expensive. What year is it and how does it drive is the other question. That's not a terrible price, depending on the interior condition.

I paid 4k for my '69 last year fwiw....

Thom, what do you want for your ghia?

Going by the for sale sign it's a 72.

I owned a 69 for about 12 years. I bought it the year I left High School. Great memories.

Looks like there is a crease right where the rear jack point is located. I would check the pan and the jack points for rust or signs of rust coverup (like fresh undercoat.)

Don't think I have ever seen a super beetle sit so high in the front. If I remember correctly, they had Macpherson struts in the front so don't know what is going on there. Heater on most beetles only seems to work in the summer. AC is usually 2-70 (two windows down at 70mph.) Seating position can be troubling for some people.

Never a big fan of the Super Beetle because so many parts are different from a regular beetle. Most people in High School just picked a regular beetle because they were easier to drop the front end and raise the back for larger tires.

I had several bugs and they are a blast. I would take it for a test drive, make sure the engine starts okay with little to no smoke, no rattles or knocks, make sure the tranny shifts okay with little slop in the linkage and last of all make sure the brakes work well since they are a real throw back. Let your wife do the test drive so she can see what she is getting into. The best thing about one of these is even if the engine or trans goes belly up, it is super easy to fix. Even she could do it!

As for that one, it sure looks good so go for it!

I wouldn't buy one for anybody I liked. When I was a teen the Dad of a boy next door had a bug, got hit in front, steering column went through his chest, kid had no Dad.

The front end is high because someone took the engine out.
