best investments you have made

I'm just curious to find out some of your best investments whether it's cars stocks etc
I'm 35 now and for me was putting money into rrsp which in turn I used to purchase my own house

I made a bunch of money on various things. I spent a bunch of money on racing and other stuff. You guys know whatimtalkinabout. I still have some cool stuff. Spending money on traveling is the best investment I have made. My wife doesn't agree, however.

Healthcare mutual fund after Obamacare passed. Up 110%.
3.0L 911 engine before the skyrocketing prices. Paid $1250 for it.
$6,000 worth of land in a national forest. Sold for $25,000 after plans fell apart to use it.
Shorted an oil ETF last June. I bailed after 100% return...could have made 250%.

And a $5000 video camera with money I didn't have while in college. Launched my side freelance company which pulls in some nice extra change every year.

Lots of luck with some hard work on the side.

10 shares of Bershire/Hatheway, @$156.00 per share in 1976. You do the math.

A great question. My answer keeps growing! I have made a game most of my life to make my money go further than most. It is a good game. Some folks go crazy and eat top ramen all day while they have millions in the bank. A little balance helps. Here are some of the top items that I have used / done. All have been good choices:

Never had a payment other than mortgage and student loan
DIY remodels in realestate
Work ethic
Never give up even when you get kicked hard
aapl
lad (lithia - bought very well)
Saved wife's income, maxed my 401(k) IRA, and lived well under our means
Buy used cars for cash
Low maintenance wife!
Decide my exit strategy for all largish purchases before I buy
Research the market and buy well - a friend laughed and said recently how I always manage to buy things "right." I do. Patience and research.

You get the idea. It really is a series of lifestyle choices rather than one thing.

Good luck and have fun!
Larry

^^ This! It's wise decisions we make every day that compound over time rather than one big score.

Did well on the stock market, buying and selling.
Took the money out of the market and bought Porsches.
Did well buying turbos and selling them when I got bored. Latest is my 77 930 with 39k.
Bought a bunch of condos.

Bricks and mortar. I'm 15 years from the official retirement age but if things continues to go well that could be a bit sooner.
The Stock Market has always intrigued me but I've never invested except for my retirement plan through work.

The most surprising investment? My 911SC... I can believe how much it has jumped in value in 16 years!
I never even thought about that when I bought it.

I don't think I have any "best investments". I have always been very conservative in terms of taking risks, so that also means no crazy stock I bought took off. But buying a house soon after graduation, before things went nuts in CA, was a very good investment. It is my foot in the door in CA. If I had to do it now, it'd be very ugly. I can't buy a second house even though the first one already pays for itself when I rent it out.

On cars I have never driven junk but also never spent a lot of money in terms of depreciation and this has saved me a lot over the years. I always buy cash and the nicer vehicles I generally buy at just over 100k miles and drive to 200k+.

I finally can see the end of the tunnel, i.e. if I lose my job tomorrow, I would be fine for quite a while as a stay at home dad on my wife's moderate income. I have to remind myself how little I owned in grad school and how much of a good time I could have just wrenching on cars, fishing and exercising. No reason not to go back to that mode once the kids are out of the house.

It sounds like you have your priorities in place. Like you I avoid risk.
