The cites in this link are pretty good, although they seem tilted in favor of EVs since the studies are by companies/organizations in support.
Are Electric Vehicles Better for the Environment than Gas-Powered Ones | MIT Technology Review Some interesting takeaways. Enjoy. |

EV's by current design, with the current technology aren't for everybody, but are well suited for some. The environmental impact is likely only a trade-off with burning oil, at best. Considering what I hear about toxic by-products, and hazardous waste from manufacturing batteries, It does indeed look like internal combustion engines are less harmful. Technology will eventually make EV's the better means of conveyance. They have a good way's to go, though. |
The current crop of Diesels will burn an EV's arse in mileage....
What's the VW TDI capable of- 70MPG in the real world? |
I have no desire whatsoever to have an EV, I could see having a hybrid that could start on gas and run on electric while charging the batteries upon coasting, braking. But where I live, 3-4 months of the year, the batteries on a strictly electric car, would have significantly reduced range due to frigid weather, and my commute would dictate that the car be plugged in at work for the return trip. I'm glad people are buying this new technology and keeping the economy going for people like me who drive older cars paid for with cash, and not falling into the aforementioned lather, rinse, repeat cycle of making car payments forever.

If you're talking about KWh per mile, I figure that an EV is close to a small gasoline 4 cylinder. |

84 mpg?! Couple Break Mileage Record With Passat TDI - KickingTires Try again. rjp |
That is hardly real world driving. When you say real world people think with someone driving it like they would any other car, not hypermiling on an interstate.
How many other drivers are seeing 84mpg? Almost none I'd bet. |
I love your son's hamburgers. Had to go to Guelph, ONT for the last one, can you see about getting some East Coast stores?

Diesel for me, hands down.

If you drive differently, good for you. Someone has done it, in a normal car, driven on normal roads. |
I don't understand why people get riled up about EVs. They are in their infancy in development. Do cars today get the same mileage, have the same power, have the same emissions as a 1921 Pontiac? or a 55 Chevy? or a 76 Corvette...?
Resources, technology, government regulation and good old capitalism will all play roles in advancing the EV. Just going to take a little time. Why argue about it? |
I had a Mercedes S400 Hybrid I know it is not a true EV but I believe the battery technology is the same. After having the car for one year the Hybrid battery went bad and the car would not start. I had the car towed back to MB and they replaced the battery the cost was nearly $9,000 luckily within warranty. Do the batteries in a Prius cost that much? If so what do you do when they go junk the car? After Mercedes finally took back the Hybrid under the lemon law I got a
S350 diesel. That car got almost 40MPG in a full size luxury car. |
Also, other safety considerations. You slash the under half of a normal car, you may or may not hit something vital, and even then it's not as hazardous (3/8" fuel line maybe?) VS. having a wreck with an EV- what happens if you puncture the batteries?
Those Tesla fires are pretty incredible. rjp |

Too literate to be Hugo. It would be full of erroneous assumptions and links to articles totally unrelated to the subject at hand. English is too good, as well.
