Small Backyards With Pool?

I want to start by saying that many years ago someone posted a gorgeous backyard with a pool. The yard was small but it all worked. Does anyone have that pic or remember who it was? I'm looking at a house with a tiny backyard but I'd like to build in a little pool. Any pics would be helpful.

there are many homes up in the hilly section of los angeles I have work on that has almost no yard but the managed to squeeze in a pool. Some are done very nicely.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1423966630.jpg

My suggestion would be to somehow find a small place to install an outdoor shower and a place to change so your guest or kids don't have to track all kind of crap into the house and use the main bath. We've done lot of those. Simple and not a lot of money to do

We don't want that here. All or none.

That one is 9ft deep in the middle.

The diving platform is off the waterfall between the fire pits.

A pool can go in almost anywhere. Just make sure to leave enough lounging on the deck room and keep the foliage low and simple. Overhanging trees shade the pool reducing the water temp and always seem to be dumping stuff in.

Wow these are some nice pools! I've gotta keep the wife away from this thread; she's already been bugging me about when we're going to get one.

At least in Florida- try to get a diving board installed. No one will do it.
I needed to replace a diving board, it had just gotten old.
I called at least 10 pool installers- no one would touch it. I talked to the distributor that sold the diving boards- he knew of no one that would install it.
Slides are even worse.
I ended up installing it myself.
Sad world we live in.

Some nice examples. One consideration I've come across that one needs to have with pools on smaller sites is how to integrate the pool with any landscaping (existing or planned). Leaves and mulch / dirt / stones in close proximity to the pool create a maintenance nightmare, especially in climates where deciduous trees drop their leaves annually. Roots can and will seek the water and can destroy a pool if the wrong type of plants are too close. Just a couple of things to consider. As a rule of thumb I'd use whatever the length of the pool is and plan on a hardscaped deck at least that wide around the perimeter (no trees or other non-controlled planters, etc. in that area).

Buy the biggest and best filtration system you can. Always. Don't skimp. Use concrete and tile, no vinyl liners (total garbage). And make sure to get a cover and installed the anchor points securely in the concrete slab of the deck so they don't pull out. Good luck!

Baz were those seats in the pool by the bar built in, or like those drop in ones? Are those any good or do they look bad in person?

Baz 02-15-2015 05:18 AM

Brian - they were poured into forms before the pool was finished. They work great, especially when occupied by large chested bikini-clad females.....wink wink.....

Swimming pool

I had a nice inground concrete pool installed about 15 years ago. It is rectangular with a width of 17 feet and a length of 34 feet. The shallow end is 4 feet deep with the deep end being 9 1/2 feet deep. No diving board, but there is a swim out on the deep end. We used it a good bit the first few years but now it seldom is used. I don't think that I would ever build another pool or buy a house with an existing one.

Thanks guys! Keep it coming!

Macroni 02-16-2015 04:54 AM

Same issue..... my wife and I recently bought a house in South Jersey which the setbacks only allow for a small pool. The pool size is not what kills it is the pool equipment, house ac units and shower that make it a challenge......

If you do go with a pool, make sure you keep safety in mind. A swimming pool is literally more dangerous than a loaded gun. A heartbreakingly large number of children drown each year, many in home swimming pools. My oldest son almost drowned at a public beach, so I am a bit of an evangelist on the subject, but do keep in mind how dangerous they are.

Op-ed piece on swimming pools vs. guns as the most dangerous weapon – Deltoid

From the article:

If every parent followed these steps, perhaps as many as 400 lives per year might be saved. This would be more lives saved than from two of the most successful safety-interventions in recent decades: the use of child car seats and the introduction of safer cribs. Potential lives saved from pool safety are far greater than from child-resistant packaging (an estimated 50 lives saved per year), keeping children away from airbags (less than 5 young children a year have been killed by air bags a year on average since their introduction), flame retardant pajamas (perhaps 10 lives saved annually), or safety drawstrings on children’s clothing (two lives saved annually). Simply stated, keeping your children safe around water is one of the single most important things a parent can do to protect a child.

OT - but wow, I never knew this: in 2013, 46 kids under 4 were killed by firearms. 393 died in swimming pool drownings. info from the FBI(guns) and the CDC(pools).
