It sounds like you have one of the early 997's. If so, you can have the IMS bearing changed out for a MUCH better LN Engineering version for about $2000 total cost. Peace of mind. I had the IMS bearing on my 2000 996 replaced at 110,000 miles while the clutch was being replaced (the original IMS bearing turned out to be fine, btw). My 996 now has 170,000 miles. If you have a later 997, then I hear that the IMS bearing in those engines is nearly indestructible.

+1

My 996 just turned 140K miles on original clutch and IMS. It's mostly a highway commuter but see's 7K RPM at least once every time I drive it. When my clutch does go (I thought it would have by now) I'll pop for the LN bearing as well. Hoping to go 200K+ with this car.

Definitely do it. What's the worst that can happen. you don't like the Mustang, sell that, and get another 997. The world is your oyster on this one. There is no downside other than depreciation.

Hahahaha, this is a Porsche Forum, what kind of response do you think you will get?

I'd say for the 997 money you would be looking at a Boss at the minimum.

Arthropraxis 02-18-2015 04:36 PM

Wait a year and get a GT350.

Nostril Cheese 02-18-2015 05:06 PM

I'm half tempted to get the V6. 300HP and 30MPG..

I like the Mustangs but the problem I have is from the base model to the GT there don't seem to be enough exterior modifications to set them all apart. When driving a Mustang you're just one of the crowd.

McLovin 02-18-2015 05:14 PM

Modern cars, they're basically all the same these days. So, either way.

The aftermarket for them is immense. You can personalize to your heart's content.

Or just get a Boss, that's pretty unique in stock form.

Well I'll chime in. It really all depends what you want at the time. This changes for many people. I have had plenty of different cars over the years.

I love cars. Not Porsches. Not Fords. Cars. The 5.0 engine is the best part of this car. Yes, interior is cheap but each car has shortcomings. Maintenance costs are a plus too I might add.

My car will be for sale in the spring. Base model, black/black cloth, stick. Under 5000 miles and no winters. It is a US car too. Looking for a new or newer SUV to haul kids/hockey gear all year round.

I can just imagine the opposite of this post on a Mustang forum. A Mustang owner proposing to sell/trade for a Porsche 997!

RANDY P 02-18-2015 06:31 PM

Sell 997, buy a Stang and a singlewide!

R K T 02-18-2015 06:37 PM

I have a 997S and wouldn't trade for two mustangs.

Make that three mustangs!

EXCUSE ME?! I can afford a doublewide thank you. Sheesh, some people.....

When I sold my 997 I didn't get all that much (on trade). I really don't think you could trade an 05 for new Mustang like some are saying but a 2011 should be doable. No I would not do that trade. If I am not mistaken the RMS IMS issue on the 996 is less prevalent on the 997.1. Before I would trade for a Mustang I would do the updated parts and a new clutch in my own garage - plus you will know you did the work and it was done right.

Yep. :)

Is the IMS bearing in the 997 motor internal requiring the case to be split?

The early 997s still had the 996 style bearing. Somewhere mid/late 2005 they made the switch, but there isn't any information by VIN or engine serial number. The only way to know for sure is to pull the transmission and look.

Hey HardDrive, if you do decide to sell let me know. I haven't had a 911 in a while.

But, you'll grow tired of it quickly because of the cheapness of all American built cars, and its a heavily depreciating asset. That thing's gonna be worth $10K in a few years. Your 997 will do much, much better over the long term, and it will be much more fun to drive. Just my 0.02!!!

I'm with Shaun on this one, GO FOR IT!

motion- Aside from GT-model stuff, late model Porsches depreciate much faster than american muscle cars...like there's no curve, it's a cliff. (My FIL just inquired about trading his '12 Panamera...would take a $79k hit from sticker...that's 2 mustangs!) You're assuming he is going to keep the 997 for the next 30 years?

Cost of ownership is lower, more fun to drive, no "Porsche Guy" image...me like :D
