Turbos to think about

We are lagging behind here folks,Not meaning to spout off, But the thresh hold of snowmobile sciences has passst us by.
The little 2 cylnder arctic cats of 1100 or so CC out of the box, over 170 HP !
People are re flashing the the dynamics for a pittance and upwards 400 HP and more!
I think we have a wastgate of a problem here.
Our little flat six seems to have been whooshed by this new snowed tech stuff.
In their favor they are running in the cold, even so sport I.C. and support way over 20 lbs of boost.
What a blast i tell you what total whine and a roar !
Somehow 600 ponies out of a flat six now seems anemic.
Your opinion may differ. I am quite impressed.

Do you live in Canada, by any chance? Maybe Alberta?

afterburn 549 02-18-2015 03:41 PM

Why, yes I do live in Alberta, Canada.....and I think about my turbo all the time!;)

Red88Carrera 02-18-2015 05:05 PM

Pffft....

I've got a 16hp Briggs Vanguard v-twin with a supercharger running 15 pounds of boost, pushing almost 50hp.

Actually, it's 800cc non-boosted 2-stoke sleds with 165 hp that have come stock since about 2009. Total package under 500 lbs . I have a few. More power with boost and I've towed a few out.

How many miles / hours before these blow up? Compared to a conservatively built or stock turbo car going >150k mi at 50 mph (3000h)?

I know people with madly built porsche flat sixes at the track (650+ hp). Of course their engines last for a race season ...

Why would feel the need to post anything here when you have a fat zero for wrench and cognitive ability?
Go parf it up with the green puke you thrive in.
Go away.
Sorry guys he is a bit boring.

Next-
Next, Supposedly, if people leave them mostly at stock HP levels they will go 40000 miles......(way out live the basic chassis )
So the 177 HP is nice and i am surprised .Quiet TORQ !
The biggest surprise is the ease to add HP safely. ( Thats opinion right? lol ) the dealers sell reflash .
Shasam !No wrenches involved.
I have no idea on the dwn hill curve where it will start to eat into the TBO with more HP
Next.
My G.F. has a dragon turbo 800. (Are we not cute? a turbo couple? LOL)
It has 5000 plus miles on it.
Other then needing some *basic parts that are laying on the kitchen table its a great unit
The track looks new
Steer has small play inner tie rods. (kitchen table )
Carbides are shot but I have new Bergstroms here , with his wedges, and some new rebuilt Fox coilovers from Als wreck yard in VT (300)
Everyone says these dragons will go 40 to 50 K.
IDK
And truly i am not knocking Porsche . I am just saying technology has meta morphed a long ways.
But the turbo is here to stay. Every lawn mower will have one shortly .

GH85Carrera 02-19-2015 05:12 AM

No doubt turbos are here to stay and can transform an engine.

They do as a consequence add complexity.

I have heard that all future 911s will be turbo. A 4 cylinder engine boosted with forced induction will have the same if not more power as a non boosted 6.

I don't own a turbo of any sort so I really do not know. Has any turbo gone 200,000 miles with no rebuild? For the folks that trade cars every 40K miles that is a non issue. I keep my cars for 20 years or more so it does matter to me. Yea, I know I am weird.

Upstate NY.... It's pretty much Canada here, except with more people that are no where's near as friendly.

afterburn 549 02-19-2015 05:47 AM

As long as you are N. of Albany its not bad people wise.
Tis funny , To the peeople in NYC anything across the bridge is upstate.
