IOW some people are speculating he had a "spell" that caused him to loose control and caused the impact and they're worried it might happen again.

He's one heck of a driver.

From what I read the telemetry indicated he was braking hard till impact, so he was conscious, but yeah, who knows ? After a few years of relative safety, Bianchi and then this... I don't blame him for taking it easy. Can you imagine thinking you are 13 and "meeting" your russian model girlfriend ? ;-)

Fernando Alonso will not compete at the Australian Grand Prix on the recommendation of doctors as he continues to recover from his testing crash in Barcelona.
Alonso spent three nights in hospital after being knocked unconscious during the second test and sat out the final four days in Barcelona on medical advice. McLaren said last week the Spaniard had yet to be cleared for the race but remained confident he would be.
On Tuesday McLaren confirmed tests had found "no evidence whatsoever of any injury" but that doctors had recommended the Spaniard sit out the opening round of 2015 to minimise the chances of second impact syndrome. The statement said doctors had conducted "an exhaustive series of tests" which found him entirely healthy from a neurological and cardiac perspective.
The statement went on to say: "Fernando's doctors have recommended to him that, following the concussion he sustained in a testing accident at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on February 22nd, for the time being he should seek to limit as far as is possible any environmental risk factors that could potentially result in his sustaining another concussion so soon after his previous one, so as to minimise the chances of second impact syndrome, as is normal medical procedure when treating athletes after concussions.
"In order to limit those environmental risk factors, specifically, his doctors have advised that he should not compete in the imminent Australian Grand Prix meeting, which will take place on March 13th, 14th and 15th."
Reserve driver Kevin Magnussen, the man Alonso replaced last December, will replace the Spaniard for the season opener. McLaren says doctors are supportive of Alonso's ambitions of returning to the car for the second race in Malaysia.

Martin Brundle says "there's a lot of smoke and mirrors around" Fernando Alonso's testing accident, which led to him being advised to miss the Australian GP.

Although an "exhaustive series of tests and scans" have found that Alonso is "asymptomatic of any medical issue" following his accident, doctors have recommended that he sit out the season-opening race in Melbourne on 15 March.

However, there have been plenty of question marks over the circumstances surrounding the double World Champion's accident.

He crashed his MP4-30 into the wall at the exit of Turn 3 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on 22 February and was airlifted to hospital, resulting in him spending three nights in hospital.

Although Alonso and McLaren insisted he is "completely fine", it was decided that he should miss the final pre-season test, but they seemed pretty confident he would be fit for the Australian GP.

However, the Spaniard was on Monday ruled out of the race on medical advice, but former F1 driver and Sky F1 commentator Brundle was left with more questions.

"Something is amiss. Something doesn't add up. When he missed the test, I assumed it meant he would miss the first race," he told Telegraph Sport.

"It's a very strange situation. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors around. We get back to the real crux of this in the first place: did he have an event that meant he went and hit the wall, or was it hitting the wall? Is it cause or is it effect? We don't know. Everybody is a little bit coy about it so something isn't quite right."

Meanwhile former McLaren driver Gerhard Berger is confident Alonso will come back stronger.

"Crashes are part of the game in F1," he told BBC F1. "Fernando is such an experienced driver, he will deal with it in a good way and I don't think it's going to have any effect on him. He will be ready to go racing again

."

Is there anything reliable and official that there was a concussion? The driver's have a G-meter in their helmet that flags @ 15G, and as far as I know, this was not triggered.

This would mean the impact to his head was not much more than the G-loads in a top fuel dragster run.

From Vettel - he was going slow, then veered off to the inside of the turn.

From data posted, he got on the brakes, downshifted 3 gears, then went off the track at about 70MPH turning into the inside wall.

Something fishy somewhere for sure.
