Watching Nascar
So, I made the decision to watch the Great American Race yesterday.
I haven't watched Nascar in about 3 or 4 years, maybe longer. I think the only thing that's changed is that there are even MORE commercial breaks, (mostly for super-violent Fox TV shows or movies) and I sure did see a lot of empty seats over in the turn 4 area. Good god. Boogeety boogety boogety? Still? But, in between the nonsense, there was some really good racing, 3 wide, 10 deep for the win with 20 laps to go and (at least till the last turn of the last lap) nobody crashed! And somehow, Nascar couldn't wrangle Jeff Gordon into the winners circle, in spite of all the machinations to try and make that happen. (I'm convinced that certain cars have looser rules. They's been far too many hollywood stories for this not to be the case. Kevin Harvick winning his first race in the Number 3 after Earnhardt died; Danica getting pole position in her first year in the bigs; Jeff Gordon on pole for his last race at Daytona. Far too many "you couldn't script this" events to be a coincidence for my conspiracy minded brain!) |

NASCAR conspiracy theorist ? Good god, I don't like the hype up, the prerace show, or the idiot announcers either, but you can't fake or predict the racing. With 43 850 HP engines twisted to 9000 rpms and turning 201 mph laps 3 feet apart, it's amazing any of them finish the race.

I watched the race yesterday, good thing there were friends and beers to keep me distracted from the gross nonsense that is Nas-Carbage.
Its a joke... the scripted interviews, completely equal cars, rules about rules for officials to officiate over... Anyone notice the empty stands, the demise is in full swing.

I watch the Daytona 500 because it is at Daytona. I love that track. Don't care at all for NASCAR.

I don't know, my view was pretty good, didn't have to watch commercials either.

NAS-Carbage. I like that!
Among the many things I don't like is that the announcers shill for the fuel provider. I lost count of the number of times they said, "...he comes in for a full tank of Sunoco race fuel." Its gas, is what it is, guys.

They decided to increase their exposure by paying for the TV time to have their name mentioned any time an announcer mentions fuel is put in a car. I think its over exposure. Too much advertising in the audio, I watch on mute these days.

As for conspiracy theories.
NASCAR won't inspect/penalize non title contenders as much. Win a championship, and your T's all need to be dotted. The #27 kept bringing ilegal wheel spacers, NASCAR kept telling them no, but with no penalty. The #27 was in the top 10, one of those "chase" spots. Ban hammer came down like a main sail left up in a hurricane.

I actually like Nascar(and most other forms of racing)The ticket prices have left many people on the shelf. The crush to get out of that track is unbelievable and to many(like me)not worth the effort.Always went to the twins on thursday but now they have ruined that for tv.That is past my bedtime &36 is way to cool for me.Kid Rock put on a good prerace show if you saw that.Sebring up next,$500.00 for 2 if you want in the Porsche Corral, jeez

The three-wide, eight-deep run in the final 20 laps was fun to watch as we waited for the pack to eat itself in a massive crash. They were lucky someone in back blew his engine so they could slow down and break-up that pack.
Corporate-speak is alive and well in NASCAR. A car came in with a blown engine and dropping oil all over its garage area. The pretty Fox mic lady asked the driver what happened and the driver said the car had an "oil containment issue." 40 years ago the driver would have more accurately said, "It done blowed up on me! Put ole all over the track too."

I haven't paid much attention to NASCAR since they stopped using real cars. It's been a long time.

dude, it's boogity.
![]() Conspiracy? Doubt it. It's bumper cars at 198mph. Takes some decent stones ( err, "guts" for Danika ) to wrangle those sleds around the track. 13 second pit stop with 4 wheels, fuel and a suspension tweak? I find that impressive regardless of what type of racing. It makes for decent background sounds while putzing around the house. I met Darrel Waltrip and Rusty Wallace in the 70s when I was a kid growing up in Bristol. Good times.

I appreciate it for what it is. As long as you temper your expectations, it can be fun to watch.
I watched the last 2 laps on Youtube ![]()

Nas-Garbage has gotten so bad, it's more predictable than wrestling.

The open seats in Turn 4 are part of the Daytona Rising rebuild. Why they didn't cover it with a tarp/banner is beyond me. They are increasing the width of the seats and taking the whole backstretch out.
