R.I.P. Mr Nimoy.

In his later years he embraced the role and actually began to dentify with Spock in many ways. He definitely struggled with the typecasting. He put out a few speaking and space-themed poetry albums that were trashed by the critics and not well received by the public. They were pretty bad. The Trek movies gave him the opportunity to expand and deepen his character.

Today, I am detecting a lot of nostalgic reminiscing that is inflating those endeavors. But yes, he was forever typecast as being Spock but did finally accept it. Afterall, when you see him in the following non-Spocky movies and TV series he appeared in he was always seen as Spock. In my opinion, the Spock character was one of the biggest attractions people had for the original series. It was a novel idea, 1/2 human 1/2 Vulcan with green blood. One of the very first portrayals of bi-racial identity-conflict in popular culture. I always enjoyed the stuggle when his human side escaped and was immediately subdued by intellect and discipline. He (Nimoy) carried the weight of that struggle metaphorically his whole life.

First, I am not Spock.

Later, I am Spock.

Both books written by Nimoy.

RIP, old friend.

I wonder if he embrased the typecast or just caved in to it for the ability to get work.

Nimoy seems to have been fairly pragmatic. So I think he may have embraced the typecast when he discovered it was not going away. Plus, it did find him work in the Trek films.

Nimoy directed 'Three Men and a Baby', two of the Trek films and appeared in Mission Impossible so he did enjoy significant successes. In addition to the off Broadway productions he also starred in a couple made for TV movies, once as an arrogant brain surgeon, IIRC. Still, I don't think there was any doubt he was frustrated.

Watching Star Trek right now on METV.

They are airing "Amok Time" in honor of Leonard Nimoy.

This was not the episode that was scheduled to air.

Very cool.....

I still tune into Star Trek every Saturday night at 9 on METV.

Will be interesting to see if there's a tribute to Spock this Saturday.

MeTV remembers Leonard Nimoy with special programming this weekend. From the 'Star Trek' episode "Amok Time," in which Spock travels to Vulcan to perform his native mating ritual, to Nimoy's appearances on such shows as 'Bonanza,' 'Rawhide,' 'The Twilight Zone' and more, we're highlighting some of the actor's most memorable television appearances. See schedule breakout below. Available on most MeTV stations.

Thanks Byron - that was a great Star Trek episode.

You and I are very fortunate to have grown up in the Star Trek era.

On Twitter, William Shatner wrote of his friend, "I loved him like a brother. ... We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love."

George Takei stated, "The word extraordinary is often overused, but I think it's really appropriate for Leonard. He was an extraordinarily talented man, but he was also a very decent human being."

"Once you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Spock RIP
