Dry Creek Vineyards wines and red wine lovers

The missus and I really like their reds. We regularly have their Cabernet Sauvignon and their Zinfandel which run between $15 and 20. I think that's pretty reasonable. We also really like "The Mariner" which is, I believe their premium meritage. The other day we were buying some at the local Specs and the guy that showed us where their wines were (the place is so big, I can never find a thing) showed us their Endeavor which is their premium Cab and their Old Vine Zin. I haven't cracked open the Old Vine Zin yet, but the Endeavor cab is as good as the regular can, but a bit smoother.

When we were at the store, the guy that was helping us mentioned that he had a friend that was one of the Dry Creek wine clubs. Apparently, you get soem special, limited edition wines and special member pricing. The member pricing is about the same as the prices at the local Specs.

Anyone else here drink or familiar with the Dry Creek wines? Anyone have any recommendations for similar wines? I've had folks recommend some other cabs and Zins and invariably, the stuff that gets recommended tastes very flat and watered down.

We also love the Dry Creek line up - and were wine club members there before starting our own wine project in Napa. The owner is a great guy as well - David Stare and his family still own it - which is kind of unusual for a winery of their size, many have been gobbled up by the big boys by now. Their location is very picturesque as well, and is a favorite cycling destination for a picnic when we go to Healdsburg.

I believe they purchase some Zin from the Rockpile area (a very famous and arid spot above Lake Sonoma in what would have been 'upper dry creek' until they damned the stream!)

Other favorites from the Dry Creek area are Wilson, Mauritson, and Rafinelli (although many of the best / smaller wineries don't have distribution and you many not be able to find their stuff in TX). Still, the search is worth the effort if you do find them....

Great holiday spot -

To us, compared to some of the other wines that we've had, I would describe the Dry Creek stuff as more full bodied or maybe more complex. Is that an accurate description?

They've always done a respectable job of representing the very unique terroir of Dry Creek Valley. The Zinfandels are king there, however the cabernets can be equally delicious, although they are a bit too ripe for my own preference.

Dave is great people---and the wines are his passion, so for that alone you almost can't lose.

That reminds me--I have a bottle of the Endeavor that's probably just about right to enjoy!

Cheers!
