Need a Better Email Service Provider...

I've pretty much had it with Charter email... When I'm home, it is down a half day to tow days about every two months. When I travel, I cannot use my Microsoft Outlook at all and have to use webmail. The Charter webmail is absolutely horrific. Extremely "flaky" and just about impossible to send any attachments which are necessary for my work. There is nothing wrong with my computer, etc (confirmed by a very reliable repair shop) this is wholly a Charter issue. I even use a webmail for one of my clients (their webmail) and theirs runs very reliably on my computer. When I call Charter to complain, they just tell me that the email is "free" and that I can basically just XXXX off because this what I get for "free."

I would like to have my email through another provider. I do not want a GMAIL or YAHOO account, I need to keep my current email address. I need a stable, reliable provider so that when I travel, I can continue to work/send attachments, etc., which are critical to my financial well being. I do NOT expect the service to be free, but would appreciate it if were reasonably priced.

Open to ideas. Thanks!

angela

It would depend on what your email address is. If you own your own domain and simply want to change hosting providers, that can be done, but if your email is something like Lanco@charter.com, you won't be able to keep that email if you want a different provider.

Spot on.

If you do own your own domain then you can buy an email service for a couple of bucks a month from any major hosting company, 1and1, goDaddy, Namecheap, pretty much anyone.

I had a cox.net e-mail address for years. When I set up my gmail, I set the cox address to forward to gmail. My response comes from gmail but the cox address works fine.

Laneco 02-28-2015 05:12 PM

Well dang... Looks like I'll be changing the email name as it's a charter.net...

Guess I'll just do a slow migration and idiot-charter.net running for as long as needed to be sure nothing slips thru the cracks. Time for new business cards too.

Did I mention I really HATE charter?

Well use it as an opportunity to register a domain name that is uniquely yours which you can keep forever.

If you fall out of love with your provider just move it somewhere else.

Never be held hostage.

Domain names and simple hosting are cheap.

If you need help shoot a PM.

One tactic for getting the new address out there is keeping the old address alive and when mail comes to it reply using the new email address.

Eventually your regular contacts will adapt.

SM.

Excellent advise. I have a hugh.rxxx@ca.rr.com email, but I also have a hugh.rxxxx@hughrxxx.com account that I own. A former Pelican is kind enough to host it for free, but I can keep it forever, as long as I pay the whatever annual fee which is minimal and I can move it anywhere. I also own the domain name, but do not maintain a website currently.

porsche4life 02-28-2015 08:28 PM

Angela I use an exchange program hosted by monster. $9/ month for full exchange support plus the full Ms office suite. My email is at my own domain name and it all works great!

biosurfer1 02-28-2015 08:28 PM

FWIW, I bounce mine through godaddy which has been fine for years. Can't even think of a time it's ever been down when I needed it even though once every couple months I get notified my servers were down for 18 seconds or some ridiculously small number I don't care about. Pretty cheap too

hughrxxx.com?...is it hosted in the San Fernando valley and you have to be 18+ to have your email hosted there?:D

Hugh R 02-28-2015 08:34 PM

Well YEAH???

Also, Blast out an email announcing your new address to your contacts. Provide some other tidbit of info that your clients would find useful. Its an excuse to contact your entire database, and might just drum up some business!

I was introduced to 1&1 through Stomachmonkey - awesome. $1 a month and I made a website. Check out 1&1.

Here is the GoDaddy set up I am using. Email only is cheaper, but since I didn't have the office suite and needed it, its a real sweet deal. For 108/year I have my email and office taken care of and always up to date!

Yahoo - every now and then it hangs up. The spam filtering is good.

flipper35 03-03-2015 09:05 AM

1&1 is a good company to work with. We are using GoDaddy, but if I were to do it again I would use 1&1. I have used them in other business related things.

Laneco 03-21-2015 09:54 AM

Thought I'd update this thread and thank all of you for your always wonderful advice.

This business trip nearly caused me a meltdown as the charter email tanked completely for part of two days and for an additional 3 days would not let met send anything larger than a few sentences (definitely no attachments). I was so peeved that I decided to get a domain name right now and migrate over to a new email address rather than wait until I got home to sort out.

All handled including the domain and email migration in about an hour. Done and everything works 100% plus it is soooo much faster than charter.

Thanks again,

angela

Had Yahoo (joined because wife was using it) and hated it... moved to Hotmail (part of the evil Microsoft empire) not great but not bad for free email.

stomachmonkey 03-21-2015 11:19 AM

The biggest issue with hotmail accounts was their rampant use by spammers / scammers and other scum.

So much so that @hotmail addresses are routinely flagged as spam just because.

I did a search and this seems to be the best thread to resurrect.
RIP Laneco - Angela, the OP :(

What are the latest recommendations for an email hosting service?
I want to migrate from our current ISP - as we might drop their service in the future when we retire/move/etc.

Seahawk 08-24-2023 01:59 PM

She was an Angel.

I use Zoho now as my private email. Very happy but I am not an apex email person beyond Outlook and I am as tech savvy as a sabot.

It is free, btw.

herr_oberst 08-24-2023 02:14 PM

Damn, the other day I was instructed by the Pelican overlords to reduce the content of my PM box, and I came across a few messages from Angela; now this.

RIP Angela. You were the best of us and this BB hasn't been the same since you've been gone.

And I don't know about hosting email sites.

Just checking in to document the coincidence.

MBAtarga 08-24-2023 02:31 PM

I actually was her Secret Santa one year. I sent her a jar of Nutella, a Porsche hot wheel - few other things. She messaged me the Nutella was a big hit - that she loved chocolate.

^^^^ Yep. I think she was lost to Covid .... and such a loss :(.

I've been using Gmail since it was by invitation only in test mode.... warts and all. At least the spam/bs filter is great .... but I'll never forgive that cute "hippie chick" who sent me the invite :D

id10t 08-24-2023 03:33 PM

Been hosting my own on Linode for 20 years....

PorscheGAL 08-24-2023 04:16 PM

She was truly one of a kind. No advice on email.

Mark - just wanted to say thanks for not starting a new thread on a subject for which we already had content on.

Bringing forward these older threads bring value for anyone looking for (more) input previously furnished over the years.

I have Mozilla (Firefox) and have their Thunderbird as my email client. Seems to work pretty good.

I was as well. I sent her a Porsche die-cast, a couple of Porsche books, and a valve adjustment tool. I also complimented her restoration of her dad's Monte Carlo Aerocoupe.
She sent me a nice Thank you note.

Methinks Angela's husband (Steve) is still occasionally using her logon ID based upon a couple of threads I just looked at...

And if he happens to read this post .... I hope he is doing well.....

Yes, Angela and her hubby Steve shared the account.

Angela was fantastic. I'd say Steve had a real angel on his hands so all that really changed was where she's hanging out. My continuing condolences to Steve and Angela's friends and family

Hmm, it is sketchy. I think you may be onto something.

MBAtarga 08-25-2023 07:47 AM

That URL goes to telegram - a messaging app. Looks like recent posts Steve has a 911T up for sale - so I think it's legit.
