do people perform illegals street races in Europe?

Drag race common in Europe? In the US, red light racing in a straight line happens very often. anyone know if that's a common thing in European cities? If not, what's the most common illegal street racing?

You think they have big gathering like us? I don't know where they go now, but back in my day (we are about the same age) we used to go to Dodger Stadium and have a go at it. I am sure the short street light to street light racing must happen all the time.

The penalties can be much stiffer in other countries, so I don't think they are as big as some of the illegal gatherings here. I never got into that scene, but I was invited to meet up at the local Arby's on Wed nights and then go to the location. I just wasn't into that scene or crowd.

There's a long tradition of street racing in Europe.

Back in the 50's & early 60's the cafe racers (esp. the "Ton Up Boys" & Rockers) were an alleged menace in London and other UK cities.

There are stories of timed motorcycle races around a pre-established street course, with the time based on getting back to the starting point (like the famous Ace Cafe) before a song ended.

These days, the term "boy racer" in England is roughly the equivalent of "ricer" in the US.

I think they refer to them as "Chavs" there.

Sweden has a pretty hardcore american V8 scene. Back about a decade ago HOT ROD did a feature on some of the crap they have around there- we're talking blown 7 Sec. mustangs with hemi drag motors on the street-they said they ran on deserted interstates in the middle of the night.

They even had the World Finals going in FL- people from Europe would show up- it was like being here except you couldn't read the slogans on the T-shirts.

It was about 5 minutes after Grog the caveman put the first wheel on an ox cart that his son was trying to figure out how to make it go faster.

Oh, my heavens, no.

Europeans are far too cultured to partake in any such garish and decidedly American pastimes.

Here in Tucson, one of the major East/West streets is named Speedway Blvd. it got it's name from when the doctors used to race horse and buggies there. I got busted for racing my 1970 GTO there about 20 years ago. I beat a Buick Grand National by 1 car length. The cop said I won the race so I get the trophy.

I seen those Getaway in Stockholm vids. but how about drag racing in places like Italy, Germany, or Switzerland and other countries where a bunch of young punks (some old punks now in the US)gather and drag race down in some part of the city. I know about the UK

Again, yes, but not nearly to the degree it happens here. Way more video cameras in Europe and the penalties are steeper. You could end up losing your license for life.

Not Europe but organised street racing and burnt out meetings are common here in New Zealand. Not surprising though as our lives seem to revolve around cars.
