2008 Nissan Rogue duplicate key needed

Called the dealer to ask about getting a duplicate key made for our 2008 Nissan Rogue after our daughter lost one.

Because it has a chip, they said it had to go through service to program it at $105!

Anyone heard of this? Is there a work around?

Last time I had a key made was at the Honda dealer and the parts guy duplicated the chip in the key.

Thanks.

Sounds like your daughter owes dad $105.

The problem isn't duplicating the key. That's the easy part. The problem may be (was for my '04 miata) that the cat them had to be programmed to accept the chip in the key. With the Mazda if you had two keys and we're programming a third, you could do it yourself. If you only had one, then it had to go to the dealer, and they had to call Mazda NA, to get a code. Even then they had a hard time getting mine programmed.

I had a 2009 Wrangler that didn't have the keyless key, with the buttons built into the head. A local locksmith came out and did it for about $100 including programming the key. He had a computer that plugged into the OBD port to program the keyless entry and security chip.

Our local ACE hardware duplicates chipped keys for a lot less than $100 - as noted above.

They also do a fine job of making duplicates on OEM blanks for older cars.

Yep, for my old miata with the security keys, the keys cut from the dealer were around $150 plus another $100-150 depending upon the dealer and who answered the phone to program. I managed to find a dealer with an Internet sales prescence that would sell the keys and cut them for free for, IIRC, $50, but you still had to pay a dealer to program them (again, only if you were down to a single programmed key). I think I ended up paying $105 or something like that to have the key programmed and that was at the low end of the range.

I ordered two keys from Amazon for $29. Should have those in a couple of days and I can get them programmed at the same time.

My thought was it might be a DIY deal if you had the knowledge.
