Can anyone recommend a vacuum cleaner they like in the $200-$300 range?
Looking to replace an old Kenmore canister vac for the house which I like, but its worn out. My understanding is that Kenmore has long since change suppliers and the new ones aren't so hot.
Dyson is off the table and its outta my price range; I also think its overpriced considering most of the molded parts are chinsy polystyrene. Thoughts?

We have a couple of vacuums, not counting a big Sears shop vac 30+ years old in the garage. One is a very small shop type vac with long wand, brushes, etc for doing ceiling fans and other high places. It is light and easy to carry and handy. For the last few carpeted floors we have an Oreck that is probably 15+ years old. It has great cleaning and is pretty light and has lasted quite a while.

The Shark over at Costco is a great vacuum. I think around $120-150 or so and works great.

I think you are selling the dyson short. I picked one up by the curb the other day that someone put out because it had no suction. When I took it all apart, one of the tubes was plugged from sucking up a small marker. I was very impressed with how easy it was to take everything apart, and how everything seemed to be very well made. Cleaned it up and put it all back together and it works great! Loads of suction. Sold it for $100 in short order! We have a dyson for our use and I've never had a problem with it. Tons of suction, and when you mess with them you see that they were made to be taken apart should anything get plugged.

Have a couple of bagging Hoover uprights. They are adequate but one (contra-rotating twin beater bar/brushes) does require an annual disassembly and cleaning for proper functioning. To date, I've not killed either. FWIW, I'm a fan of vacs that use a bag.

I lusted over the Mieles like every young yuppie/whatever, but when I balanced the price against the performance and, recently, the maybe made in China bits ... we went to Japan.
It's not thrust in your face in every upscale mall, but Panasonic has some nice stuff. Ours isn't one of these - was bought a few years ago - but these are similar. They really suck, have good ergonomics, are very quiet and seem built to last. http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-MC-CG902-Canister-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B003AM711G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1425760711&sr=8-2&keywords=panasonic+vacuum+cleaner Amazon.com - Panasonic MC-CG917 "OptiFlow" Bag Canister Vacuum Cleaner - Household Canister Vacuums Availability of replacement bags seems to be the biggest complaint (likely not available locally). We just buy in bulk and not worry for a few years...

If there is anyone in the house with long hair, or there are things with fur, then eventually, they'll all have to be disassembled and cleaned. I've never had any vacuum that didn't get hair and fur in places that didn't occasionally need cleaning.

Not sure why anyone would be anti-Dyson. I really like mine. Now I did buy it from Goodwill for $12 so I may be biased. If it broke today, I'd be all over this deal... DC40 $240 shipped to store from Sears:

Lee I know that's a lie. You'd buy another one at goodwill!

The hazards buying cheap used stuff is that you get something you really like for next to nothing... and then it breaks! Dysons, large flat screens TVs, Vitamixes, etc. don't show up used very often!

She has two vacuums to pick from. When one goes down, I service it. Not a dime spent on either. One is a hoover, the other an oreck, I think.

Zelmer. Made in Poland. 18 months ago we got one to replace a 25 year old Kenmre. Compact and powerful. Not the quietest, but easy to lug around. HEPA filter and collapsible wand. We have no carpets so were happy to get one without the power head.

I'd see if you can find a older Electrolux canister. They are built like tanks and work great. If they have a dealer store anywhere nearby, it might be worth a call. Not sure about now (since they've been bought out), but they used to offer a selection of used/refurbished units in their stores, from customers trading in their previous models when upgrading.

We have been using the same Hoover for 18 years. Its built like a tank. Weighs about as much as one too.
