Question for Ducati guys (lost key)...

My suitemate lost all of his keys to his 2003 Ducati Monster. The dealership wants something like $5,000 to change all the locks and reflash the ECU to accept the new key (their words). It sounds like BS to me. Do you guys know of any better options? He tried to contact Ducati directly and they will not cut a key for him.

Does he have the owner's manual with the little card in it with the key info? I think my Ducatis have one. I also have a strange looking key with a little card on it, which I assume is for getting new keys cut. I keep them with the manuals.

Call Dave Roosevelt at Seattle Used Bikes. He used to own Seattle Ducati. Absolutely stand up guy. He'll point you in the right direction.

You should absolutely out the scum bag dealership trying to scam him like that.

Search Ducati.ms for info on "red key".

Mrmerlin 03-09-2015 06:01 PM

and its true with a Ducati if you lose the red key your bike computer is an anchor,
and another computer and matching keyset must be installed
The new computers are not cheap nor is installation

I got keys!

Keys are for my 2002 Monster (Totaled after I front sided). Just been sitting in a drawer. You are welcome to them if they are helpful. I look for them tomorrow and let you know what I find.

$5000 for a freaking ECU!?

dos531 03-09-2015 08:10 PM

Send your ECU to this place and they will disable the immobilizer for you. Then just get a new key cut

Can't you just jam a screw driver in the ignition? :D

dos531 03-09-2015 09:24 PM

It's not too big of a deal to pull those parts off, probably half an hour of work.

With a price of $5000+ to get it running again, I think I may bypass that and mount a different ignition/key from another bike whether it be used/wrecked/parts bike.

How about a proximity keyfob with a push button start ?

greglepore 03-10-2015 04:07 AM

The Nemesis is a good option, had one on my 749. Around 1k installed. The other alternative is to buy a matching ecu key and lockset on ebay from a wreck. And yeah, the dash etc comes off easily.

Yep. I blowed up the motor on one of my Hyper 1100s and am parting it out. The keys, ignition, dash, computer are worth something like $1500. I had no idea.

Interesting. I've seen the red key mentioned in a lot if ads and wondered what the big deal was. Now I know, as the OP's pal could buy another bike for what Ducati's asking.

I don't get how someone loses all three keys, unless he kept them where all those Craigslist sellers keep their titles. ;) I wish him good luck with a solution, though.

Thanks guys! He is going to go through that ECU programming site. I'll keep you updated, cheers!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif
