I'm glad I don't have to share the roads with cars modified in that fashion.
What I would expect is any non-standard suspension configurations would be engineer certified before you could run it on a public highway.
Where the heck are the brakes on the Buick with the wire wheels? A single caliper on the drive shaft? There's an automotive advancement for you.

I think some older Jags had inboard brakes,

Inboard brakes, as long as you don't break an axle are OK, Old Audis had them too. I must admit by all accounts they were a PITA to change the discs.
The problem with a single disc on the propshaft, especially with an open diff is if you are in a low traction situation, I have seen one wheel rotate backward, allowing the vehicle to move with the brake set. Not a desired situation.
