Any of you been there since restrictions eased. (Have restrictions eased??)

If you have some extra 53-55 chevys parts, bring them with you. You'll be extra welcomed.

Nah, I try not to visit any country that is designated as a sponsor of terrorism and try not to spend money in any country that so significantly violates the human rights of their citizens.

Wife and I are going to Havana next winter. I want to see it before it becomes westernized and modernized. The world is getting smaller and more similar. Cuba, for better or for worse, is one of the few places left on the planet that isn't, yet.

As much as I would like to go...it is just too selfish to prop up such a brutal regime by spending money there.

be sure to wave at the people in jail for owning the wrong books while you're there.

Friends went without me a few years back, after I told them I wasn't going there for personal/political reasons....some here flamed me for it, whatever. I saved a few grand to do better things and nobody that went said they would go again. Better places to spend my vacation dollars.

Cuba is westernized and modernized. Papua New Guniea, on the other hand, isn't. Neither is Irian Jaya, lots of nations in Aftrica, South America, and areas of Asia.

If you want to visit a place that isn't westernized and modernized, there are a lot of better (more remote / less modernized) locations...

Just sayin'

Very true, and most of those places are on our list, but they're all much more difficult to get to. We can get to Cuba and back for a long weekend, under $1000 each. Very close and easy.

My buddy was there in January. Said he noticed more soldiers present (Varadaro area). They were checking the locals id's and didn't bother the tourist's. He goes every year. Also you had to look for cigars. The places that normally would have them didn't. The cigar store in the airport was gone. He figures the government is selling them to somewhere else and keeping more control on that business.

Political reasons aside, I would like to see Cuba before it becomes another Hawaii or Mexico. I quit Hawaii after five trips as I just watched it get more crowded/congested each time.

When I was in Fiji a few years ago, my thought was this was probably how Hawaii was 50 years ago?

Good. See it before US tourism invades. Try to take time to rent a car to see some of the smaller towns & countryside.

Hey Bob - same thing with Tahiti. Way over commercialized now. I wish I had gone there in the 60's!!!
