My '72 has 119, maybe 219K and you can eat off of it! Dirt just isn't really an ultimate tell, with this car, or your car, or my car.

Your potentially buying a used car. One that has seen some miles. Its not gonna be mint unless your willing to pay serious top dollar. if your gonna let some dirt or make you wince, then I'm not certain your heart is into it.

You have to buy on emotion. Try as you (or I) will, there really is not practical reasons to get these cars. They are an emotional thing and if you over think it you will never just let go.

I know you don't want to buy a bucket of troubles. No one does. But lets not forget your thinking about buying a used semi-super car. It will have some issues. They all do. If you like it buy it. you fell in love your ladies imperfections...made her that much more interesting!

Along with sugarwood's comment about the fact that it was a status purchase and likely never driven hard, the dirt, on the underside (where one often finds dirt) is another bi-product of a checkbook mechanic who likely paid someone to wash the windshield.

The undercarriage isn't far off that "near mint" GT3...just saying.

In case I wasn't clear, there is nothing is the underside of engine shot that concerns me. It's good to do a PPI before washing that part, you can see evidence of leaks, etc. If I bought it, I'd give it a quick steam clean underneath and try to get any residual cosmoline off as well as dirt, oil, etc. Makes it a lot nicer to work on and maintain. But I keep the drivetrain and undercarriage of all my vehicles clean, even work trucks. It's easy in this climate and makes a big difference for doing maintainance. :cool:

THAT is the downside to low mileage. Sometimes a car sitting for extended periods of time is worse than being driven daily. Rats don't nest in a daily driver.

And I'm with speeder about the engine - I'll hit it up with the power washer from time to time just so I can troubleshoot oil leaks better and see them when they start. Nothing is worse than trying to figure them out on the F-100, where the entire engine is a collection of 45 years of buildup and crap.

Yes Bill, I'm willing to co-sign for that. The last few weeks have been a wild ride - it is just a stunningly capable car, with really unflappable manners.

I think you make an interesting point about the 'right' car. A little over a year ago, I was in the market for a C4S, and really wanted Lapis Blue plus lumbar adjustment and heated seats (I deal with lower back muscle spasms and sciatica from time to time, and heated seats are a godsend on those days). I found 'the' car for a pretty good price and at a reputable, straight-talking dealer - but then found the Seal Grey car I ultimately bought for more than $2K off the price of the blue car (and it was a 2005 versus the blue car which was a 2003). It didn't have heated seats either. Looking back, I wish I had just paid another couple thousand for the car I wanted. It is always smart to pay the right price, but if you find 'the' car, think it over, whether that is worth some extra $ to you.

All that being said, Steve, I think you made the right call on the car this is the subject of this thread. The undercarriage didn't bother me a bit other than the oddly advanced surface rust on the muffler. However, the dealer's 'moving target' of a backstory is irritating and just raises too many other potential question marks.

The droppings in question. Dealer swore to me he hadn't found any in there before. But given how many other things haven't added up I'm with craig that this isn't a new issue. And it's impossible to see any farther into the dash without taking it all apart. I tried! ;)

Shame, beautiful car otherwise. Leather still supple, car still smells new inside!

Amazing that a dealer asking $54k for this car isn't capable of a detail that would have eliminated rodent poop in the glove compartment! :rolleyes:

I don't think the chance of the rodents living in the wiring harness is high, but I certainly would not want to find out. On a project car or smoking deal? Sure!

No kidding! How about you vacuum the freaking thing first? I'm going to Leatherique the entire interior of my 996TT before I list it, and that's in addition to a full interior detail, clay/polish/wax, wheel refinish, and maintenance. Btw, spark plugs on a 996TT are a massive pain in the ass. I just got done with them, it's about three extra hours to remove the bumper, heat shields, and intercoolers.
