done most of Western states including portions of Alaska.

I lik to drive:

Alcon Hwy as far as I can to Prudhoe Bay. Stop by some of the small towns and check thing out

The eastern sea board and really explore states up from NY

If you like the high desert, sweeping vistas, etc. it is hard to beat Route 50 out of Reno across Nevada into Utah. Often called the "loneliest road in Amaerica" I find the trip simply stunning.

If you go during the right time of year - early fall - you any not see another car for a half hour. The mountain passes are amazing, the straights between the mountains a great opportunity to blow out some carbon😀

The great thing is that Route 50 feeds into some other extraordinary drives in Utah.

Rt 50 is fun but desolate, the passes get fun and then the LONG LONG LONG straight down the mountain into a valley.

There are roads in Arkansas that I will not name on a public car forum that make the Tail of the Dragon look lame.

At the other extreme of fun roads is I-70 out of Denver to Kansas City. That is the most boring road possible.

I will knock off all the NE states next year when I drive up to see Pete. It will be nice to hit the little bitty states and get them off the list. Then on to the big states up north.

I had a lot of fun driving my old 73E in northern Arkansas. Just watch out for the logging trucks!

Oh, hell yes.

I-70 WEST of Denver, though, is pretty cool....at least as far as interstates go....

West of Denver is great. East of Denver is Boring.

dave 911 04-14-2015 11:28 AM

Oh yeah, been there done that.
Almost ran out of gas heading into Limon, bucking a 30+ knot headwind and watching my 'miles remaining' clicking down alot faster than the "Miles to Limon".

That made it a little less boring :)

Tail of the Dragon is highly overrated. The quick and beautifully flowing roads nearby that go to and from Fontana dam and the surrounding areas are FAR better.

Alcan Highway from WA to AK.

Really? I've done that one many times and it's 45 minutes of straight line and boredom, punctuated occasionally by butt clenching when you realize you're low on gas and the only gas station is on the micosukee (I could remember wrong) tribe ground and you might not make it that far ;-)
Or the rare time an alligator will try to cross the road (happened to me once at night)

That would not make the top 1000 on my list, even in a 356A at top speed, which I did once. Except maybe the day cops are on strike as a top speed test in something newer.

It isn't the most exciting roads to drive, but it is a very unique stretch of asphalt that has it's own character. But it is true - I would not want to drive that road every day...

This is what it looks like in SUMMER ........... ;)

I'm flying into Las Vegas, picking up a rental and heading out on this route early next month.

I've done a number of these. Each one has moments. A storied road that I didn't like AT ALL was the Natches Trace. It is made of sections of concrete that are spaced perfectly to send the driver of a short wheelbase car nuts. Thump thump.. thump thump.. thump thump.. for hours and hours at 45 mph. It really, really sucks. One that I think might be cool is the Travel To The Sun highway in Montana. The only time I was on it was following Jerry Keyser in his '58 Porsche coupe. We were in a deep fog/cloud and the only way I knew where the road was, was by watching his taillights. If he drove off the side, I would have driven off right behind him. I would like to drive that road someday when I could see where I was going.

Seahawk 04-14-2015 03:28 PM

You may have done it before, but if you have extra time, heading out of LV on Rte 93, past Alamo, then into Caliente, then to Rte 319 into Utah, it is well worth it. The roads are in excellent shape.

Just a really nice off interstate route.

I was in the area in March of 13 for a month and wandered around quite a bit. You can even get off the pavement for a while and head onto Delemar Dry Lake, where we did our testing, then up to Caliente.

I did the Calif. PCH Hwy 1 to Big Sur thing. It's way too congested now days.

I highly recommend Mt. St Helens if you have a half day. It's very very memorable and very worth going. I also did Mono Lake and Yosemite and had a great time.

I am very curious about Bodie, the ghost town in the high Sierra Nevadas. I also want to go see and explore parts of the route that Lewis and Clarke took. The other site I want to see is where Custer died, and where Wild Bill bought it.

I've driven the 89 from Zion to the South Rim of The Grand Cyn...it is so beautiful when you drop out of the mountain area form Jacob Lake into the wide open dessert it is almost unbelievable, we stopped there for almost an hour just trying to take it all in.
