Case or No Case
Do you use a case with your Smartphone? Samsung Galaxy S6 is out with the super-duper looking iPhone style phone. And it now is glass and aluminum, like the iPhone.
BUT...what is the point? Everyone puts a case on their phones. It's like those families that buy the extra expensive couch, then put a thick layer of clear vinyl over it. I have the sleekest thinnest phone in the world, but now I put it in an Otter-Box! Does anyone use a Smartphone without a case? Am I missing something? |
I gots me some butter fingers so my otter box has saved my phone on many occasions.
|
I use a Droid Turbo without a case. The body is covered in ballistic nylon and the screen is Gorilla Glass 3. And, motorola warranties the screen against damage....one time. Still, not bad, crack the glass and they'll send you a new one without the normal $100 cell insurance deductible.
It's stood up to quite a bit as well. Last week, it slipped out of my hand, hit a granite counter top then bounced and hit the floor and it was fine. |
Case here. But not a huge one.
|
I have an iPhone 5C, which has a plastic case with nicely rounded corners everywhere. It is hard to keep a solid grip on when your hands are perfectly dry; forget greasy/sweaty.
It has lived in a case since day one. Admittedly not full-on Otter Box sized, though. |
I tried my Iphone 5s without a case. Bent over to pick something up that fell on the ground in front of my house. Phone in shirt pocket. Falls out of shirt pocket, about 2 feet from the ground - screen cracked. Bought a Lifeproof case after that and used it with the broken screen. Launched it real good pulling a jacket out of the car with the phone in it - completely dead screen now
So, I have a case now. It is BS. This is my last product that is not made to last as is. I should have gotten that Samsung water proof model. G |
I put a thin, grippy skin on my iPhone 6. I like the look out of the box but it was just too slippery. Seemed like it was destined to fly out of my hand.
I think Otter boxes are pretty dumb. And let's not even get started about belt clips. Although they're probably pretty popular here on PPOT. |
I have had a iPhone for many years. I have dropped it several times and the case kept it 100% safe. I can't imagine using it with no case. That and I am a nerd that does not give the slightest flying flip what anyone else thinks so I carry it on a belt clip. Easy to use and safe and always at hand.

I use a pretty think case from Spigen, along with a "glass cover" for the screen.
I think Samsung made a mistake with the Galaxy S6. No replaceable battery, no external SD card, not water proof. They went to all the trouble to make it "just like the iPhone", and then people are going to stick it in a case anyway. |
I have a rubber case made by Griffin for my Apple I phone. Can make the difference between breaking and not breaking. Definitely worth it.
Cheers, Guy |

Imagine buying a Porsche and then coating it with 5mm of clear vinyl to prevent door dings and rock chips... |

Imagine a car is made that needs a 5mm coating so it does not get totaled when you go down the road at regular speed. The Iphone et al are not designed for life. You can only use them on carpet while you sit down. G |
I have a Speck case on my iPhone. As often as I've dropped it I know I would have had to replace it a few times by now.
My previous iPhone had an Otter case. I was cutting the grass on my hill one day and ducked under a tree branch. The phone fell out of my shirt pocket and right under the mower deck. Shot out in 4 major pieces. I don't think the Speck would have saved it either. |
I used to protect my iPhones with Otter or similar cases. With the iPhone 6, I just have a clear bumper case. When I cycle, I put it in a ziplock bag. I realized that I'm pretty careful w/ my phone, and don't really need a super protective case.

I have the Mophie Juice Pack on my iPhone 5S. Not so much a case but it works like one.
I have dropped it a couple of times and not broken anything....yet. :) |
And no one has a body shop to fix a bent phone, just replace it.
|
I use a very minimal Diztronic case on my HTC One. I've dropped my phone at least twice in the year I've had it and the case has saved it.

My Ifrogz case is almost as thin as the phone, and it bounces way better than the phone do.
|
My point is the manufacturer goes to all the trouble to make a beautiful, but highly fragile phone, and then we put a case on it. I'm turned off by this idea. Samsung was goaded into making the iPhone clone, and it is turning me off. The "plastic" case on the S5 was never an issue and I have it in an external case anyway.

no case. no smartphone either.

I keep my phone and the missus' phone in very thin grippy cases. |
I typically haven't had a problem with damaging phones until this model. The first Nexus 5 had a screen that after a few months only showed every other row of pixels. Back it went.
The replacement Nexus 5 works, but the screen cracked during a bike ride. It was in a backpack that was empty except for two jolly ranchers. I get home and the screen has a crack through the middle. It's hard candy, but WTF? |
I have what is kind of rubber slipcover on mine. I wouldn't call it a "case" per se. It's got tread on it like a tire, which I thought was cool. I find a naked iPhone too slippery and this case makes it more grippy without adding a lot of bulk. It also adds some padding for when I drop it. My wife uses her phone naked, so I can always distinguish between them. Did I mention it looks like a tire?

The girls run 5s phones with cases. I run an older Samsung S2 with no case.

mine is a thin case with a custom back to look like an Ampeg SVT. Found a guy on Etsy that will do any art you want.

I actually liked my old flip phone because it was small enough to fit in my pants pocket easily and there is no way you can crack the screen when it's closed. My newer Samsung 5S has the lifeproof case, I wouldn't consider the phone without it.
|
I've got a Speck case for my iPhone 4S, Not too big, works well and fits in front pants pocket.
Had an Otterbox for awhile, but it was too bulky for front pants pocket. |
S3, no case and I carry it in my left front pocket, screen towards my leg, if it gets hit hard enough to crack the screen the phone is going to not be high on my immediate list of things to get fixed
|
No brainer for me....I now only carry one phone, supplied by work. If its in an otter box and I break it they supply a new one.....if its not in the supplied otter box and I break it I BUY THEM A NEW ONE!!!!
|
Yes, cases for all phones.
But my iPhone 6 is out of the case all the time in the office or at home. Wifeys 5S has a flip case. My sons 5 has a case like targa911S. |
Mophie. I burn thru batteries quickly.
|
Ancient Casio Commando.
The whole phone is a case. It gets dropped and dunked way to often, none of that bothers it. I'm dreading needing to replace it. |
