Maybe looking at sources other than Fox News might help...
They were driving the course backwards, it's an old track without many safely barriers, and when the driver went off he speared the passenger door with the pointy end of the guard rail (which was exposed because they were driving the course backwards).

I got Married at Disney 1 1/2 ago. My wife is a huge Disney freak (super freak), anyway she wanted to get me the driving experience for a gift. I took one look at that place and said "no thanks". First off I don't like Nascar, then the second thing is I'm not pay 400 bucks to drive a Lambo for 1/2 an hour.
