If the big school promises him a job when they sign him up and graduates him and then he finds out the "job" they get him is out of his area of education and far below his training, then yes, he should default or do anything else to bring attention to the scam. I do not believe caveat emptor is a valid reason for excusing scams. While I don't have a lot of sympathy for the kid, I do not excuse the school for ripping him off either.

I'd have to see the language on whatever docs he signed. I find it pretty hard to believe any school guarantees you a job in your field of study. Perhaps they will provide you with lifelong career counseling (sounds like this was promised). But that could be nothing more than being asked to join their alumni networking page on LinkedIn (plenty of those out there). If those loans are guaranteed by US DOE, then he's gonna be in real bad shape for refusing to pay, regardless of his reasons.

It is exaggerating to claim that he has a "college degree". The article says that he received an "associate degree in network administration". What in the world does a two year tech degree in network administration qualify anyone to do? He's completed sophomore-level courses limited to whatever network administration is and wonders why he can't get a job in a highly technical industry bursting at the seams with people who have lots of hands on experience, four year degrees, or both. He would still be unemployed if he got that degree from an accredited community college, but he'd have spent less money.

He should have taken the call center job. It could have lead to managing their computer system. It happened to one of my best friends. Smart guy but he did not study in college. The best job he could get out of college was on the phone collecting bills. He hated it, but he worked hard. Eventually he became the guy in the office who fixed the computer while they were waiting for the IT guy to get there. That lead to him becoming the IT guy. That lead to a very successful and high paying career as a credit-oriented database manager for a Fortune 100 company. The whole process took about 10 years but he makes more money than me now.

I'd like to hear what the salesman told him. If the salesman said "X" and the document said "NO x" then he was lied to and defrauded.

Anyone want to see my NetWare certificate?
Ha! I worked for a training center in the late 90's when Microsoft was kicking the snot out of Novell. We had a manager who was disgusted that we were even offering Microsoft courses. He advised everyone to quit wasting time with MSFT. He advised many people to NOT get and MCSE. Ummmmm......yeah.....

I got my MCSE, walked into my bosses office and told him he needed to double my paycheck or I was leaving. He did it. Pretty good feeling for a 28 year old kid.

It also comes down to local public schools. How many times do you pass any school and see a sign stating that " We are a pinnacle school, gold level, the best in town". They adjust test scores to satisfy parents and school board members to keep in good stead with the state. It's a scam just like these for-profit higher schools.
