Would a motor that was on fire scare you to purchase
Im looking at my next work truck Have a good deal lined up on a 2500 hd 6.0 gas , with a motor noise. I have a smoking deal lined up on a used motor with 48,000 miles, but had a motor fire.
Looks like it had a fuel rail leak, or something on top. Plastic intake is melted, and most of the plastic on top of the motor, but does not look like it got very hot anywhere below the top of the head. Im thinking stealing all the periphials off my motor, pull the pan, clean out any debris inisde, seal it all up, and I'll be off to the races . Worst case, and I doubt it would be valve stem seals. I had a car burn up when I was a kid, and it got HOT, it melted the Holley into a puddle on the intake. I saved the motor, replaced the valve cover gaskets, distributor, and holley, and it ran 100%, never leaked a drop after It is about a 1/4 of the cost for a motor with comparable mileage. I think I'm going to roll the dice, and take my chances , what do you think? LS motors are darn near indestructible, and they are like lawn tractors to work on . Iron block aluminum heads |

No, no need to replace anything, they never break, who knows what happened, every once in a while, I see a bad fuel pressure regulator, maybe someone botched up reparing that job, These are hands down the BEST hd trucks on the market. I know there are some GM haters here, but you simply cannot beat a 6.0 gas gm truck. Pulls almost as good as a diesel, bone reliable, and easy , and cheap to work on. Best looking in my opinion as well . I have loved every one I have ever owned, and they hold their value also. Smart guys keep em. Who wants tranny eating mopars, or spark plug spitting/snapping , cam phaser breaking fords .

Would not scare me if it turns over fine, meaning it didn't ingest a bunch of crap and churn it up. And combined with it being a deal, it will be worth the risk. Sounds like a fun project!

My 2001 Chevy 2500HD has over a quarter-million miles on it now, and has been very trouble-free.
Fuel pump at 170,000+ miles New brushes and bearings in starter and alternator at 240,000 even though they were still working fine New water pump at 253,000 miles A couple batteries, a couple sets of tires, regular oil changes. The 6.0 runs as good today as when I bought the truck with 16,000 miles. |
Do it. A bit more work is worth the savings. I've done the fire motor thing a couple times and had no issues.

My 356 motor was on fire once. I put it out and went on my way after fixing the fuel leak. Same with the 914-6 and the tractor. No biggie. Clean it up and keep going.

I'd go for it. Some melty plastic bits are no cause for alarm!
Plus, the HD gas jobs hold their value like nuts. My Dad has an '08 and it's appreciated in the last 2 years! |

I don't think the case, heads etc. can go bad from a little fire up top. That said, what is the actual price difference to a warrantied replacement unit? 50%? 20%? I'd do it if it was 50%, but not for 20% ... If it is bad, say a cracked case you did not know about, are components such as crank, rods etc. worth anything so you could still recover some funds?
