Pissed off the wife but my Son wants to keep it that way. He's 16 so that part makes sense. Good thing I have deaf neighbors.

Any one ever take off their muffler for kicks? Just to hear what it would sound like? Is there any advantage or disadvantage aside from pissing off anyone not 16?

I just don't like the raw sound of straight pipes. Exhaust sound managed by an exhaust system is what I like. I had a friend with a little Austin Healey sports car years ago who put a cut out on his exhaust. It sounded really crappy and his gas mileage went into the toilet with the cut out opened.

I did that a couple years back when swapping in the cat. 1in 1 out, so the headers were point to the wall on the side of the garage - 911 was in the garage. Had my dad blip the throttle a few times. Damn that was loud! :D

Did it to the '44 once. Got video even!

No... But sometimes while coming home in the early hours of the morning it seems like a good idea to do some 6,000rpm on full throttle.

I had an '88 Targa that was a former club race car, complete with headers and Phase 9 race "mufflers". Sounded awesome at WOT but got old REALLY fast. Ultimately I reinstalled the heat exchangers and a B&B 2-out, which was plenty loud.

Yeah, I was installing a test pipe, had the muffler off and I just had to do it, and yeah I had to go out and drive it, and it was very cool for about 2 mins, and back to the garage we went and the muffler went back on. They do sound like massive engines when they idle like that but not for me.

It actually doesn't sound that bad or should I say intolerable. I know in some engines the muffler provides back pressure and taking it off would compromise performance. As I understand it that's not the case with the 2.7 CIS. I suppose if you wanted to shave 8lbs off you could fab a pipe straight out where the muffler joins ...

Reminds me of my buddy's straight piped 454 Nova in high school.

I removed the stock muffler from my old '79 Targa and put a 12" glasspack where the cat was supposed to be. That thing wasn't a muffler, it was an amplifier. I swapped everything back a couple of days later. Sounded AWESOME, but way too loud.


My current 951 has no muffler, but the turbo seems to eliminate a lot of the sound, it's quite tolerable.

yep, drove it to the muffler shop that way when I had the Flo-Po installed.

I've been around hotrods for awhile so open exhaust isn't a big deal to me. We used to uncap the headers on our street cars at the drag strip.

Yes, when I installed the M&K. Did the same as Rick. I like the M&K sound better.

Open headers on the V8 car. I had replaced the exhaust gaskets and had dropped the collectors & mufflers to reduce the weight. Very loud. :)

My 930's loud and pretty raspy without any pipes but man-oh-man can you hear the turbo whine!

I did that on my old '88. The catalytic converter made the car reasonably quite until you put your foot in it.

I can't remember what year you've got, but if you've got a similar exhaust to a 3.2L, then make sure you don't drive like that too much or if you do, then work out some sort of hangar for the end of the cat or you'll end up creating all sorts of cracks in the exhaust.

I used to run my SC with turn-down dumps on SSI headers.
I guess I'm only 16 at heart because I loved it.

I got black-flagged at Roebling Road for being too loud. They have noise limits due to the location of the track, and they had a db meter set up at the end of the front straight.

When I put a more stockish exhaust back on my '88 it brought back a noticeable amount of low end torque. It was preferable that way around town.
