multi position ladders like Little Giant

I am going to purchase one of these type of ladders preferably a 17 footer. Seems like Little Giant has the marketing hype but Werner sells their version for quite a bit less. So who has one and how do you like it ?

Crowbob 04-19-2015 08:34 AM

I like the Little Giant except that it is very heavy.

legion 04-19-2015 08:43 AM

I'm a big fan of Werner myself.

Scuba Steve 04-19-2015 08:56 AM

I bought the Little Giant when HD had them on sale for less than the Werner one. It's one of those things I only had a couple of intended uses for at the time but has proven itself helpful in a whole lot more scenarios.

Looking online the Werner at Home Depot in 17 ' size is $129.99 and at Lowe's it is $159.99. Lowes says on their website that they will beat competitor price by 10 % I wonder if they will ? I guess I'm off to Lowe's !

Mine is COSCO 10ft length and I use it all of the time. I hang it on the garage wall when dormant.

I like that I can extend it to 10ft and climb onto the first story of the house, pull it up onto the roof and then use it to get onto the second story.

A 20ft extension ladder hangs in the garage as well but is a PIA to get out. I only use that when I need to access the side of the 2nd story for window work where the 10 ft wouldn't be safe enough due to the angle.

I think my wife paid about $100 with a store discount(Meijer) back around 2008.

My old boss was fond of Little Giant's and every truck had them. Although awkward and at times a pain in the ass, they can be very useful. I think they'd be great for any home owner and think I'll buy one.

Bought the Little Giant in 1992 when we had a split-level house and it has been worth every penny. There were no knock-offs at that time that I was aware of and haven't really looked at the Werners. Although it is heavy and can be a pain, it is a very handy ladder to have around the house if you are a DIYer.

wdfifteen 04-19-2015 09:18 AM

I like my Little Giant. It is heavy, so I only get it out when I need to get on the first story roof. I can angle the top section down and it lays flat on the roof. I can climb the ladder and easily go up and over onto the roof.

Re; Little Giants. A couple of years ago I had mine set up in full exentsion in the "A" configuration on a concrete pad. High winds blew it over during the night and broke one of the knobs you use to set the ladder position. Called customer support the next day and explained what was broken. A couple of days later the replacement parts arrived in the mail, no charge... good customer service.

porsche4life 04-19-2015 10:56 AM

We had all three of the listed above at the sign shop. The warners were our favorite. But they are a damn handy ladder to have around. One ladder and you can do quite a few things with it.

rfuerst911sc 04-19-2015 11:05 AM

Just came home from a Lowe's run ! I read the Home Depot ad incorrectly the 17 ' was 159.99 it was the 22 footer on sale for 129.00 ! So I asked customer service at Lowes if they would beat their competitor by 10 % as their ad and signs state. Sure thing saved another 12.90 so bought a 22 footer for 116.90 plus tax not bad at all. Yep it's got some weight but it will work fine for what I need it for. I'm a happy buyer :D

I have one and love it and it isn't particularly heavy. Had it maybe 15 years.

cabmandone 04-19-2015 01:05 PM

I bought mine at Harbor Freight. Love it.

I have a long Werner also so I can get to places that span a 14 step stairway. I tested mine at Home Depot to make sure it was solid and did not bounce around, etc but it is great. The Home Depot guy said if it ever broke I can return it, no questions asked maybe after I get out of the hospital.....

Liability nightmares must keep the company owner up at night. If I owned a ladder company, customer service would be the top priority. (Especially if I owned a ladder company that made bendy ladders!)

I found mine laying in the weeds at a rental house we bought , It was a werner. I hauled it home to throw it away, but ended up using it a few times, and wow, has it been a useful tool. I use it as scaffolding, on stairs , to help paint, use it as a work bench etc. What a useful little tool .

on2wheels52 04-19-2015 03:49 PM

I ended up with a couple of Werner's from the shop, but the only work they have done has been as a semi-permanent 4' high shelf :(

Little Giant had two big pluses for me, one it was the only folding type ladder I found that was made in America and two, that thing is rock solid. Friend brought a Gorilla ladder over once and man it was so cheap, you thought it was going to collapse on you. Ladders are dangerous enough that I want a sturdy one.

VINMAN 04-19-2015 06:09 PM

We have Little Giants on every one of our fire rigs. One of our heaviest used pieces of equipment. They are great.

VincentVega 04-19-2015 07:31 PM

I tried the biggest version from Costco a while ago. I was impressed with the construction and the flexibility. I ended up returning it because it wasnt tall enough to reach the ceiling in my foyer. I can see one of these being very useful on stairs.

I was a bit of a noob when I bought it, I didnt realize how much less the usable length is.

Scuba Steve 04-20-2015 03:23 AM

I'll have to check the sticker when I get home but I don't think they're made here any more.

Aggie93 04-20-2015 04:46 AM

Thanks for posting this. I need a ladder to paint our two story foyer. How do you like the Werner?

p911dad 04-20-2015 05:41 AM

We got a Werner 17 footer when we moved down to NC. It is a neighborhood favorite for borrowing. It is easy to use, but is a little heavy, maybe 30-35 lbs. Very solid though.

I worked for the company the supplied all of the extrusion for LG back in the 1990's. I agree about the liability. Terrifying.

I haven't used it yet but plan to this weekend. But I looked it over real well and worked the latches a few times. Seems like a very well built piece.
I have an old wooden 6 ' step ladder I inherited from my wifes grandmother when she passed away. I call it " the widow maker " :D It must move/sway 2-3 inches in ANY direction when you get on it.........I'm sure this Werner will be much better !

glewis80SC 04-21-2015 08:04 AM

Have the Little Giant for home..great ladder, strong versatile but yes heavy.

scottmandue 04-21-2015 08:08 AM

I had one (generic) and loved it, as everyone said super flexible but kind of heavy.

I guess someone else love it too... it disappeared.

rfuerst911sc 04-24-2015 06:15 PM

Used the ladder for the first time today it's as solid as a rock ! Best $116.00 I've spent in a while. I had two garage doors installed today the installers asked if they could use the ladder. After using it they said they would go buy one. Very happy with this purchase and would recommend to anyone.

Don Ro 04-24-2015 09:20 PM

Good for you...great buy.
I have one...solid construction but damn heavy...haven't used it in yet 4 yrs.

aigel 04-25-2015 12:08 AM

Werner here. About 10 years old. Has spent a lot of time in the rain (CA) and is as good as new. I'm impressed. I do have it in the garage now. It is beefy, on the heavy side and I use the different settings, I.E. make a small scaffolding when cutting hedges, a V when getting stuff from a shelf and full extension when cleaning gutters or getting onto the 1 story roof.

Yesterday I had to add some 2 x 12's for the header above a 18 ' wide garage door. I had the ladder in the step ladder mode. I was able to slide the 2 x 12 through the ladder to hold the lumber as I cut it to length ! So it doubled as a work surface I was impressed with that also.

Don Ro 04-27-2015 09:22 AM

This is the one that I have...including the "work platform'.
