With that said, I'm surprised by the number of older Cayennes I see on the road. And not driven by younger folks you would think would be up for the bargain price along with the hassle of a little extra maintenance but by gray haired folks like myself who you figure would want something very reliable. So perhaps they are reliable as they age. I guess I'll find out over the next few years.

That 2011 Cayenne turbo really gets with the program when you put the spurs to it, no? :)

A Porsche? Why an SUV?

I remember my parents bought me a ... Nope, no they didn't.

I got a job, worked 20+hrs/wk, saved my $ for a couple months, bought my own car, payed my own bills, placed 16th/426 kids in my HS class, went to college and resided on the Dean's List, still working 20+hrs/wk...left with little debt, paid it off in 3 years...you get the picture.

I just don't understand this handing kids big shiny prizes thing...It does nothing for everyone.

Ok fine, perhaps an original, low mileage, Gold '96 Buick Century, but that would be motivational.

Lastly, I owned a nice, used Cayenne myself. Overall great car, more like a tank.

Saucy, you can't expect a kid to do that these days. That's bad for their selfesteem. Work? maintain grades? pay bills? Are you outta your Effin mind?

I must be...which is exactly why I associate with almost no people my own age.

I can go on, but the soapbox is broken.

Or maybe it's because you make judgements about people. We are all proud of you for paying your own way but don't hate on a kid that gets a little help. she is driving a 240 that I paid 500 bucks for. She cleans the house helps with dinner and taxis my younger child around. After surviving cancer twice and living with life long physical isues I think she deserves a break. Thank you for everyone who responded with positive feedback. That's why I love this forum. Lots of good ideas. The cayenne was just a thought but I think I will show her some of the imports.

When we were broke, my daughter did without and saved pennies. Now that we have made a better life for ourselves, we all shared the pain and we all share the benefits (daughter included). My wife and daughter will both always drive the nicest, safest, most reliable automobile possible if I have to walk. I don't want them breaking down alone some night when I am not there...just because I am cheap.

Can't buy your own iPhone 6?

Most of time it doesn't feel crazy fast but if you hold the loud pedal down for more than a few seconds on the highway, you're well into triple digits ;)

funny update

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1429593765.jpg
this came into my shop today for some interior work. I brought my daughter down to look at it. She told me " that car is way to big for me to park". So I showed her an mdx that's here also and she said it's still a little big. So next i'll show her the small suvs. She also said that she doesn't want me to pay a lot in insurance. Man what did I do to deserve such a sweetheart.

I've never seen someone put diamond plate on the bumper of one of those. Different, that's for sure.

I have been tempted by these prices myself. But then when I started reading, it got scary pretty quick. I don't have the time to be chasing gremlins and it is a fact that a 10 year old Cayenne will nickle and dime you with issues compared to, say a Toyota Highlander. What would worry me most is the thing being unreliable and leaving your daughter stranded or at least in distress, i.e. dash lights etc.

You said that this is only a little more than some of the old base compact SUVs you have been looking at. My suggestion is to take your budget to 12k for the base compact SUVs and you'll find something pretty decent.

Personally I don't get the "want to sit higher to see" argument, but the popularity of high seating vehicles certainly speaks for this being something most people like. I enjoy low center of gravity. Ultimately I feel safer, as I think there is less chance I roll or can't out-maneuver a bad situation.

Have fun with your daughter. Make this a fun experience. Mine aren't ready to drive yet and we already are eying cars they like.

That is actually stock on a Cayenne.

Normally that's a painted plastic or aluminum finish insert, depending on model. I priced replacing it on my '09 GTS due to a small crack.

Because your daughter doesn't really know what she wants but size is important, can I suggest taking her to a place like CarMax at a time when it is closed (like Sunday Morning) and just walk the lot. She will be able to see the sizes and you can narrow down the choices from there.

Can I say kudos to you, Dad, for considering something fun for your daughter. So many Dads, pigeon hole their girls in boring cars.

90% of the autos that I see rolled are SUVs and PUs. They drive so well that people think they are sports cars, then get in over their heads. They have to slam on the brakes and turn to miss the idiot they didn't see, then it's Humpty Dumpty time. No way that I would buy any SUV or a PU as a 1st car for a young driver.

I'm not making any judgments, simply stating how I was given the hard road and it served me well. I see others in my life being handed big shiny prizes and its bad news.

My wife's family and extended family are all very well off and hand cars out to their kids, nice cars, new Cayenne's, BMWs, Audis, etc etc, like lunch money. These kids don't care about their cars, treat them as disposable, and expect everything to be taken care of for them...

Imports are like appliances, they're great. Good luck, didn't mean to come across as a personal attack.

I bought my daughter a '74 911 when she was in high school. She loved the car, but struggled to drive it. She ended up with my wife's 94 4Runner which was perfect, I got the 911 and the wife got a new Lexus. Everyone was happy.

Nostril Cheese 04-21-2015 06:55 AM

I got my grandpa's 914 at 15. I had to re-build nearly the entire car.

How about a Chevy Tahoe?

She'd probably consider it too large for parking as well. I love a good Chevy Tahoe but this teenager needs a compact SUV or non-SUV. :)
