The Toyota Camry of Supercars
Was down in NC visiting Dave and got some seat time in his 2001 996TT. His description of the car is perfect, it is definitely the Camry of supercars. Easy to drive, comfortable, no drama. At least until you put your right foot down.
This car is phenomenally fast. So much so that it's faster than your standard reaction times and isn't safe to drive (at least for me) in anger unless you have a good 1-2 months in it to sharpen your intake and response times, by a lot. My 84 is downright pokey in comparison. It goes around cloverleafs like a roller coaster. It's also a great looking car. Just outside of Hershey, what an amazing day that was. ![]()

From the subject line, I figured this was going to be about the GT-R.

I was thinking NSX when I saw the thread title, although maybe light on power for the supercar moniker. A Corvette should qualify. Are 996TTs that reliable? How cheap are they to run?

Shaun, I just wish I had been able to give you a comparison drive in the C4S. It would have been fun to compare the two identical chassis, with just a huge difference in HP separating them. (I've got the C4S up on the lift; it is getting new clutch/flywheel/IMSB/RMS).
The 996tt does it all, and does it well. The Hershey trip was the first time I put some serious miles on the car, and it did a great job. Compared to all the other 911s I have owned, it is really the Toyota Camry. I was really enjoying my heated seats after walking around all day, too. When I pulled in to Hersheypark around 7am that morning, there were some other 911 guys pulling in as well. They were jumping out and immediately polishing up their cars with bottles of quick detailer and microfiber cloths. They must live much closer to Hershey than I do? I just left mine covered in bug guts and road grime.

Exactly, a car doesn't need to breakdown all the time to be a supercar ![]() Sounds like a fun day! |
