Sorry, I get too excited when asking these things. I should clarify. The switch, but you already knew that. We had a visitor today from down under. It was his first time in the us and mentioned that to me as he was not able to find the switch in the bathroom in our local Mexican joint. I found that flipping down strange and make no sense (that's because I am a dumb ass).

At the North Pole, it's right (on), left (off). The South Pole is right (off), left (on). It's a messed up world!

Indeed, light on, switch down. I don't have them in my house though. I have illuminated buttons.

Yes indeed, down is on.
I have a few of these style left in my house to update; ![]() and no, they don't have an 'off' or 'on' molded/printed on the rocker. Just down is on and that's how it is and I have no idea why that convention exists. Maybe it has something to do with the water going down the drain in the correct direction. Most of my light switches look something like this (this one shown in the on position); ![]() Usually they have a red bar exposed on the rocker when in the on position (at least the ones I have do).

It's logical to us but we also drive on the wrong side of the road...

OH and our date format is different. We go... Day/Month/Year
So 9/11/2002 in the US is actually 11/09/2002 in Aus. Lots of this stuff is from the British. I'm sure it's because we never had a war with them to gain Independence but we never adapted their version of Football (soccer) either.

Not just Britain... Most (if not all) of the European countries use the flipped day/month/year. America was the one that decided to be different.

Dang, so he was telling me the truth. I though he was jerking my chain like Dave was. Learn something new everyday. BTW, those are the same rockers switch we use in the first pic. Now, what about New Zealand?

![]() Our light switches are the same as USA but being down under/upside down means flicking it down is on. We are the same as England. We tend to copy or use some of Australia's standards for things like electrical, some building codes etc. There are so few of us there is no point in doing everything for ourselves when Australia has already done it. |
