During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon as the panicked South Vietnamese people desperately attempted to escape. On the ground, American soldiers and diplomats confronted a moral quandary: whether to obey White House orders to evacuate only U.S. citizens or risk being charged with treason and save the lives of as many South Vietnamese citizens as they could. April 30, 1975 was the day Saigon fell. In Vietnam, it's a celebrated holiday. Outside of Vietnam, it's a day of mourning of loosing South Vietnam to the communists. Guess the documentaries are being put on the air because of this.

Just think of all the Vietnamese outside of Vietnam. They probably wouldn't be there if South Vietnam remained a separate country.

Soundly defeating the enemy...and then pulling out to let our allies (and innocents) be slaughtered by the millions a couple years later...it does sound familiar, and depressing.

One of the really interesting rescues was of the Vietnamese Chinook pilot who had his family jump to the deck of a US Navy vessel then roll the Chinook and jump to safely as it hit the water.
