Would You Take a Chance on a 07 C Class with 170K?

Just wondering. The car looks and drives well. Its an 07 C class (240 I think) with 170K on it. Asking 6K for it. Seems like a bunch of miles. The C class is the bottom of the line for these cars and they still ride and drive great.

Ask yourself why it is so cheap.

If you can afford to treat a $6k car as disposable, why not? Just be aware that at some point you will encounter a repair cost that will exceed the value of the car, and it will likely nickel and dime you, especially if you don't DIY.

Its a salesmens car and not a car salesmen. If it was 70 k on it I would bite but that extra 100K is just not worth it. I was hoping on an outside chance that he didn't do his homework and didn't know that the KBB on it is 8K and up.

Has it been serviced primarily at a dealership, and have the corresponding stack of reciepts to prove it ? I don't think it has too many miles for that price and age of the car, it would be similar to buying a cheap Porsche.....what all is it going to need replaced within the next year or two while eclipsing 200K miles, and is that something you are willing to gamble on.

I believe that the car is probably half the price of the same car with only 70,000, so you need to think that you have $6000 to spend on repairs before you are even with the lower milage car. This doesn't take into account the pain in the azz from it actually being in the shop getting repaired though.

offer him 4500-5k cash hmm and haw about the mileage tell him you don't want to gamble for more than 5k,

I dunno.... I sold our 2007 C230 Kompressor back in 2011 for $14K with only 45K miles on it. Car seems overpriced for what it is. I would spend a few thousand extra and find one with lower miles. Maybe sub 100K.

Salesmans car makes it worth less! Means it's had the damn wheels driven off it.

I love my wife's E class and I dream of an S class some day, but I can't stand the C class. It seems cheap to me. I personally don't see the attraction.

trader220 04-27-2015 02:27 PM

170k for $6000.... not unless its a diesel

Its a ticking time bomb and its only a matter of when before you encounter a repair that costs 50% of the price of the car or more. Those tranny's are notorious.

Or it has spent its entire life on cruise control at 75 MPH.

The C class Benz is a car made for the masses and after 1995 at the end of the W124 body, they as most US domestic cars, are throw aways. I've had more than a few MB's but would pass on this one.

Do you have a link? I was looking for a way to turn $6,000 into $1,500.

sc_rufctr 04-28-2015 06:36 AM

Pass... Let someone else buy this one.

The C Class may have its issues but MBs are still good cars compared to the others.
Find one with lover mileage and enjoy it. There must be lots to choose from.

Ex had an early to mid 2000's C320 I believe. I drove it a few times. Thought it was a POS. Lot's of electronic gremlins, rattles and shakes. Then again, she wasn't famous for buying good cars or taking care of them.

Winner winner.

Nada fogging chance at 170k... Unless Carmax warranties it for a song.

Just the title of the thread says it all: 'take a chance'...

No thanks. Not for me.
