How was your day?

I came home from work:
Her: How was your day at work?
Me: It sucked.
Her: (she is a teacher) My day was horrible too! I had tests to give the kids, teacher drama, end of the school year..blah, blah, blah...
Me: It must have been a tough day.
Her: What happened at work with you?
Me: It started calm, although it was very hot to be in uniform. First call was an elderly man who was burned 30% of his body with 3rd degree burns. He was cooking lunch and caught himself on fire. His body shut down and he died.
Me: Then a man walking down the street with a pickaxe decided bath salts was a great mood enhancer. he "axed" several cars containing innocent people, walked into traffic, and tried to hit one of my crew. In reverence for human-life, one of my men Tazed him, but that did not quite work. They took him down, he kicked them, spit on them, and was out of control. One of my guys suffered a broken ankle.
Me: Then I get a call from a person having a dispute with his neighbor. He wants me to break down the neighbor's door, beat him up, and take him to jail. I told him that would be violating as many guaranteed rights and Constitution protections. He called me every name in the book and attempted to educate me. He told me he pays my salary with his taxes. I asked him for a raise.
Me: Overtime has been cut again as we deal with personnel shortages and increased crime rates. I had to staff a shift 3 men/women short and tell them to be safe.
Me: My day sucked and it was only Wednesday. Today is Friday and tomorrow is Saturday and we are short staff again.
Her: ......crickets

Yea, the end of the school year is tough.

Stay safe DavidI, that's not easy work by any stretch.

Are you LAPD?

Porsche-O-Phile 05-01-2015 10:53 AM

Did you both choose your careers or were you forced into them?

motion 05-01-2015 11:16 AM

I drove my rental car to John O'Groats, Scotland today. Tomorrow, I'm driving to the British SBK races at Oulton Park.

One thing that I just cannot for the life of me understand is why people get up each morning and spend their day doing something they don't like.

I know people have reasons for doing this, but none of them make sense to me.

Life is short. Its a journey, not a destination. Believe it or not, you are actually in control.

John O'Groats was OK, but the nearby Duncansby Head stacks were amazing.

I don't think anyone goes into a career such as teaching, law enforcement or EMT thinking about the bad days. They happen. A friend of mine was a 27 year vetern of law enforcement. He had bad days, some very vad days, but enjoyed what he was doing.
My wife taught elementary school for 33 years. Yes she had bad days, but always wanted to teach.
For many, the stressors are part of the job. It's when the good moments no longer make up for the cr@p it is time to get out.

Best
Les

To me, a career in law enforcement is like skydiving. I'm inexplicably attracted to the IDEA of it. When the reality sets in, I know it's absolutely not for me and I maintain a very high level of respect for those who can pull it off.

Stay safe out there, Mrs. DavidI!!

j/k although being a teacher can probably feel like a war zone.:D:D

Be safe and thank you for doing what you do, David!!

Rot 911 05-01-2015 12:34 PM

At least you have a place (Pelican) where you can vent! Stay safe.

look 171 05-01-2015 01:37 PM

Stay safe out there. Its a tough and dangerous city. What part of LA are are you patrolling and keeping safe for us?

lowyder993s 05-01-2015 02:48 PM

Take it all out on the targets Sunday, enjoy the company and your son...it'll all be there for you when you get back! :(

Hang in there, David - believe it or not, the majority of folks are behind you.

The ones who are not....well their opinions don't count.

Stay safe sir!

Classic!

When good citizens would tell my dad that he worked for them he would hand them a dollar and say, "This covers you for the next ten years. Have a nice day."

hmmm, agh...ya. OK.

There is compassion then there is...well, no compassion I guess.

mikester 05-01-2015 09:03 PM

Nice empathy!

Sorry about your day. My Wednesday was lame too but not as bad as yours. I still dig my job though as I am sure you dig yours. Not every day is rose petals and bubble baths...

Still David, be safe. I'd the Mrs works for LAUSD tell her to be safe too.

What if the things you like doing are expensive?

You make a couple of moves, a million here, a million there, you got it.

look 171 05-01-2015 09:43 PM

David,

On the side note, you are LAPD, right? If you are, how often do you shoot at the academy in Elysian Park? My friend, or better yet, my wife's high school buddy, Ray is the firearm's instructor there. I am wondering if you know him. He used to tell me all kinds of crazy stories when he was out on patrol.

Hope you have a better weekend.

DavidI 05-02-2015 03:08 AM

I did not mean to complain, just vent a little. It gets frustrating to see bad things happen to go people such as the elderly man. I work in South Central for LASD.

No more complaining from me.
