That's okay, when our vehicles are all tracked so that they can be taxed by the mile, such modifications will be considered criminal.

From the OP link:
Automakers to gearheads: Stop repairing cars
"Manufacturers and their lobbyists have submitted comments on six of the 27 proposals. The specific topics cover: unlocking mobile connectivity devices, unlocking consumer machines, jailbreaking all-purpose mobile computing devices, vehicle software diagnosis repair and modification, and software security and safety research."

This begets the basic question: Why are manufacturers integrating such vulnerable and hackable devices into the core infrastructure of their cars?

Once a car is sold it fully belongs to the customer/owner for personal use.
Right?
When I buy some merchandise I can paint, burn, chop it up, or throw it into the trash. It's mine.

The manufacturers are designing "passenger seat roof eject" big red buttons all over the car and then expecting nobody will push one of them.

Same concept as when the mobile phone companies made it illegal to unlock a phone. That was overturned.

Enforcement would be a challenge. They would likely single out one "criminal", throw the book at him and hope the sheep will step in line. Remember the MP3 suit? One Napster user got a judgement registered against her.

Here is the group pushing it. Interesting Subaru and Honda are not listed as part of the group.

1). "Our Principles have three important hallmarks that are the touchstones of the commitment of participating automakers to their customers. First, consumers can expect transparency. Automakers will employ a variety of methods to provide consumers with clear notices of their privacy practices, including through owner’s manuals and company websites. "

Like getting a full spec mfr wiring diagram from the dealership?
Like being able to flip the switch and stop unneeded individual systems from running?
Like offering consumers models without integrated features to begin with?

We've already seen how transparency really works in government, banking, and communications.
It has never been for the consumer's benefit.

2). "Second, the most sensitive types of consumer information receive heightened protections. For many, information about where and how they drive is private. Under the Automotive Privacy Principles, automakers pledge to provide protections for sensitive information that goes beyond similar principles in other industry sectors. "
"For many"...cough...

Being able to opt-out may cost extra, and be only available to select limited screened customers.
Then we begin a stratified society with "special rules for special folks".
Think about that for a moment.
Your neighbor's new Camry might be very different from your own.

It's cultural.
This new big government surveillance and tiered society comes from the hollywood media people.
Did we learn nothing from history?

3). "Third, automakers clearly state the limited circumstances where they may share information with government authorities."

They put all the tracking, the microphone, the camera, the connectivity, and the remote kill switch in the car.
Then the NSA/TSA/CIA/FBI/and sheriff roscoe decide how and when to use it.
Russian and Chinese and criminal hackers? pshaa!

Car companies are people too! Right?

Yep, I'm OK with that.

As long as I can sue their arses off if I get even a single failure in the first 15 years.

What could go wrong?

BTW if you are ever in Clovis California and have way too much money, go get a car serviced at Nissan of clovis.
Either that or take a match to the car and turn it into your insurance, it'd be cheaper and less hassle.

That is the perfect place to go if you like a dealer MIS-DIAGNOSING a problem and charging you $800 to replace a $90 MAF and then afterwards saying, "huh. That didn't clear the fault. Guess what you really need is a new $1200 computer. In addition to the $800 ($90) MAF that didnt make any difference".

When called on it, it was OK we'll knock $200 off the MAF and $100 off the computer to make up for the mistake.

But then I got involved and said I ain't paying for the MAF at all, she didn't need it!
Then it was threatening to go back to full price and denying the bad diagnosis again.

I'll never own another nissan and I'll definately never do biddness with anyone related to "Lithia auto stores corp".

I blame all the kids with their riced-out Honda Civics. They indeed make their cars more dangerous. Plus they believe they can 'make better' that which the car maker has spent countless hours and dollars designing. And then they wonder why their cars handle like crap, and why they keep falling apart!
