Question Opinons sought for best deck paint to use - re:repainting Mom's back deck

I told Mom I would repaint her back deck.

It's wooden, covered, - and maybe 20' x 12'.

The existing paint is not bad at all. In the center area there is some wear and tear and that's the motivation for the repaint job.

It was last painted in 2011 with this:

Mom says she wants the exact same stuff this time. I told her I would research and get back to her.

Can I use an airless gun or does it have to be rolled/brushed on? I sprayed my whole house back in 2000 and the paint is still doing well so I know how to spray.

Thanks for any input!

I use Cabot or Behr as that is a good quality that is available locally.

Snow, Ice and Sun are hard on deck stains, so if it's covered, and in a mild climate, that's in her favor.

You can certainly spray, but after you factor in time to mask and clean-up, it might go quicker with a roller or pad for a small project like this?

The best thing I've found by far is Amteco TWP (Total Wood Protection). I used it on a 12x12 redwood deck years ago after trying two other big name/big box brands that lasted about a year. It lasted until I sold the place. Nothing lasts forever in that situation though, and you are no doubt aware of that. I used it when I treated the wood for my patio almost 6 years ago, but that's the supporting pillars and under the roof which aren't exposed to direct sunlight. If I remember right, the last I got was water soluble (California), but I'd try to get oil based. Look at it online.

Deckscapes is fine.

Sherwin Williams recently acquired Duckback Stains which they now call SuperDeck.

I just finished a deck this week with the Solid Color Elastomeric Deck and Dock - it went on great. Will see how well it holds up.

I've got to rebuild mine in the next year or so. I'm kind of embarrassed of my tiny, pathetic deck....

I used Sikkens oil based wood stain last time I did mine about 5 years ago. Stuff's not cheap. It's held up pretty good though.

For a 20x12, it would be just as easy to roll it on and brush it out as it would be to spray it. Get a decent and compatible undercoat for the worn section.

Sherwin Williams makes good paint.

Never used that but we've put down hundreds of gallons of different types of sherwin Williams paints on customer jobs and never had issues with any of it.

Thanks for all the valuable input guys!

I really appreciate it.

I'll stick with the SW deck paint then - my Mom will be VERY happy about that, too.

The reason I mentioned spraying instead of rolling is there are hand railings and balusters also (see pic below) - seems like the spraying would be much faster and maybe also do a more thorough job. It wouldn't be a big deal to mask off that doorway & siding.....

Maybe I'm biased, but spraying doesn't mechanically push the material into the pores and most is wasted.

S.W. makes great interior pastel colors.
Thick, consistent, spreads smooth, low odor, etc.
They were actually a pleasure to spread on a wall.

For outdoor heavy foot traffic you might want something with a ceramic base.
Bonding and anti-mildew is a prerequisite in Fl.

(fwiw: some decorative inserts, balusters, or even painted lattice might accentuate that railing)

Good thing Mom isn't reading this....don't give her any ideas, John!

'You know who' will be doing the work and I don't have the time....

Thanks for your input on the painting. I always felt I can the paint into all the crevices better in spray form. Guess it's all in the technique.

Sorry, I have nothing to add because in Ca we can buy the best paint or stain, it is still not nearly as good as the worst paint somewhere else in the country.

Thanks, Don [and all] - will let you know what happens. I like spraying but sometimes it can be a PITA with clogs, taping everything, and then you still have some over spray no matter what...
