Snake season has arrived.

Wife & I saw two gopher snakes on a walk yesterday. Unfortunately they had gotten onto the road & didn't survive. On a walk today we spotted this rattle snake crossing a dirt road. It made a break for the side by the time my wife could get a picture.

I've relocated two blackies, and one corny already this month. They're cool, and I don't kill them, but I hate having them getting into the blue bird boxes. I put them in my absentee neighbor's yard, or on the Tobacco Trail where Cary animal control will likely get a call from a frightened suburbanite about a vicious snake on the loose. :D

"Workin' at the snake farm has it's charms. Nothin' to do in the winter, then some kid gets bit. At the snake farm.

Paul Thorn is one of my wife's favorites. I can see her point.

I saw the title and expected it was a post from Hugh.

I was looking through some plastic bins in a rack in the garage where I keep various things. I moved one and heard a sort of scraping sound. Looked around & the scraping sound was coming from one of the bins with castors in it. On further investigation I could see a tail which moved when I disturbed the bin. I thought it was a lizard & took the bin outside and started removing the castors. What I discovered was a four foot long striped racer intertwined among the castors . They are really fast, and it wanted to go back into the garage. I had to do some running & jumping to herd it off to the side of the yard.

Make plenty of noise walking, wear your boots, carry a walking stick and a cell phone, just in case. The rivers and creeks around here are low and dry respectively, but still a good place to find a snake.
