Quit my job and become a hippie

Thinking I should go for it. Just buy a tent and abandon everything. Sit around smoke weed. Odd jobs here and there for food.

Sounds pretty good..

Anyone here ever done it?

I work in the art department for movies and TV, so it's kind of the same thing. Just a Carny with a dental plan.

I was a white water rafting guide in California during the summers in college in the late 1970's.

Didn't need a tent.

Probably sounds better than it really is. Closest I would consider getting to that would be living on a sailboat in the carib and living off my mil retirement. But, alas, too much to do right now.

I would try to stay in a warm climate, Ventura seems to be a hot spot for that.

When I graduated from college I decided to ride my bike up to Canada. I packed everything I had on racks and headed up the blue ridge parkway. I would spend the whole summer exploring on my big adventure. The first night, I picked an old fire road on the side of the mountain to camp on, set up my tent, got in it, and within 5 minutes was bored s#$#less.
Then in the middle of the night I awoke in terror when something BIG came walking up the mountain right next to the tent. It was heavy and brushed right by it and kept walking up the mountain. It must have been a bear. I tried to scream to scare it, but it was more of a pathetic whine. Then next morning when I awoke, two hunters came up the trail and apologized for scaring me when they were out the night before.
The next day I headed north. It started spitting snow. Not wanting to spend all day stuck in my tent in a 32 degree rain/snowstorm I banged a u turn and headed back south.

That tent sucked.
The end.

I could honestly live in a small class C motorhome (if I were alone, no pets or wife), and change my locations with the weather. Spend the Summer in Alaska, and the winters in Arizona or Florida, and everywhere in between the rest of the time. I would need my Kawasaki KLR 250 enduro along for some fun and for crashing up logging roads and twisty mountain passes.

Lived five months in the Toyota Motel in the mid-70's. $5/day was enough for food and gas back then. I think I could do it on $40 today (but I'd rather stay home).

Made me laugh, guffaw. Thank you.

pcardude, how old are you? Age influences the choice of sloth: What works at 20 may not get you laid at 30.

There is a young woman who stands by the highway off-ramp every few months with a cardboard sign "travelling and broke, anything helps" Sometimes she is with a dread-locked guy and dog, sometimes alone, but always the same message--she and her guy are both healthy, and are certainly not stranded here as they pop-up in the same few spots every few months--every time I see them all I think of is Cartman yelling "G*d d*mn Hippies"

Don't be a hippie.

My brother did. He's happier and more free than anyone I know. He worked for an aerospace company as a design engineer and grew tired of the rat race. Sold his house in Seattle and moved into a 5th wheel on two acres on a lake up in the mountains. Does odd jobs for spending money. My brother is not married nor does he have kids. Goes on week long fishing expeditions in his boat. I really do envy his lifestyle. I would do the same but my wife objects. LOL.

For certain people, changes like this are a total win. Frankly some of the haters don't have the balls to leave the rat race (guilty). Walking away from the way that you're *supposed* to live and finding something that is closer to nature or subsistence living is somewhat romanticized but shouldn't be rejected out of hand. We've been talking about our options along these lines but it is easy to get addicted to the "stuff" lifestyle.

I could totally live on the beach, it was a dream of mine... wife, not so much.

Hawaii would be the perfect spot for me... free fruit growing on the trees... free fish from the ocean... I met a guy who was doing just that, was in veterinarian school, visited Hawaii and decided to stay and live in a tent. Bartered with the locals to take care of their pets in trade for food, had a few plants in the jungle and sold to the tourists for some pocket money.

I'm not a hippie, but sometimes act like one when we go camping. I cook every meal over an open fire, usually steaks, pot of chili, or eggs and bacon/sausage. I could live a pretty good life staying in a warmer climate and living close to nature, and not needing much cash. It would be neat to go visit family and friends throughout the United States and Canada in a nomadic lifestyle.
