Mine too...by the time I discovered them, they were pretty trashed.
I ended up with two SR500s...one at a time, and a new SRX600 that I regret selling.
I sought out the Jap. OEM oil cooler for the SRX...a rare bike in the US.
Only brought them in for one year.

I used to ride mine in early 2000 as a daily rider until it stalled on me in rush hour traffic and I could not kick it over. pretty heavy bike to be playing frogger with. I bought a DRZ400 to replace it and relegated it to dirt bike duty, eventually gave it to my ex-brother in-law.

Ahh, the fine art of kick-starting a bike...especially that 500.
Even w/that compression release it could be a _ _ _ _ _ .
My trick was to have the jetting tits-on...and know what to do to get it started...hot or cold.
Never had too much difficulty after that. But you had to break the code for each individual 500.

I thought I had a foolproof method. But if you get the cylinder wet it was game over. I gve a little to much twist while under pressure.

My next door neighbor had one of these when we were in high school! Way to much bike for a 16 year old! If he dropped it on the trail it pretty much took both of us to get it back upright again. Yeah, you'd better know how to work the compression release lever when kick starting that one or you might get hurt!

Let's talk thumpers for a while.
To me, this is the ultimate sensual, simple motorcycle with smooth, elegant, and pleasing lines.
A supermotard way back then.
Umberto Borile's B500CR:

A nice SR500 cafe:

.
Then the grey market Yamaha SDR200.
A 38 hp/220 lb. tasty, trellis-framed, rip-snortin' power-valved stroker.
Loved that bike...but man did she shake!

~~~~~~~
.
My Yamaha SRX600. Kick myself in the ass on a daily basis for selling it.
Around 40 hp, but acres of torque...a narrow little pit bull, she was.
Brought in only one year...'86...didn't sell well - kick start.
Now a cult bike.
the original sort-of-modern adventure bike.
i have owned the 550's and 600's. they are total tanks.
that particular beast is a handsome example.
Had to be at least 30, the original 1976 had 30.
I had one in high school and beyond with a Supertrapp on it. They did better keeping the oil cool than the Honda XL of the day. No one in our group had a CR as we all road on the road as well. They have a lot of bottom end grunt for some of the trails but not good for MX. Hare and Hound they were OK. You could traverse some deep water with them. I finally tried giving mine away but no one would take it so I sold it fro $100. It had bad valve guides and a broken throttle cable by then. Looking at a local XT 600 that I can probably get for $500. Good shape but hasn't been ridden in a couple years and i think I was the last one to ride it. I took my MC license test on it when the previous previous owner had it. Got chewed out for not slowing down enough for the speed bump. I said I slowed down plenty and have a foot and a half of travel, I wasn't going to lose control.
I would love to have one of these. I loved these when they came out when I was a kid Is it me or are they becoming relatively expensive? A basic restoration project would be nice, looks like parts are readily available.
Also, one probably has to be realistic and see that a $4k bike that's 3 years old is 10x more capable, albeit missing the nostalgia?
I really want a dirt bike but figure may as well get a dual sport, so I can take it on the back of the SUV in case I get stuck in BFE.
I had one when I lived in the sand box. I came home for R&R in 1980, bought it, bought an oil cooler kit for it, opened the crate, tossed the oil cooler kit in the crate and re=banded it and had it shipped to me....Rode it for close to 4 years and then sold it a local for what I paid for it in NY
Kick starting it... if you tried on the wrong part of the stroke it could toss you...One night I was taking a shortcut through the desert to Eilat and ran out of gas, so Instead of walking blindly through the desert looking for a road, I decided to shelter in place and would try and get gas in the morning...
Then I realized how the eff am I going to find the bike when I get back with gas....So I couldn't really sleep..... about 30 minutes later, I see a lantern approaching... and then when It go closer, I noticed a guy holding the lantern walking towards me... So I got pretty nervous thinking I would be vulture food in the morning...
Turns out it was a Beduin who had watched me picking my way through the desert, and he noticed my headlight go out.. so he came to investigate.. he spoke some English, I opened the gas tank and gave him a look... he laughed!!
We then took turns pushing the bike to his camp, where he and his family gave me tea and dates, fed me dinner, and pointed at me and talked about me until we fell asleep...
When we all woke up.... they gave me more tea, some bread for breakfast, and then we siphoned gas out of a ratty old Land Cruiser they had.. and I was on my way again...
While in Eilat I picked up a bunch of fruit for them.... and was lucky enough to find them when I was on my way back the the airbase...
Beduins are some super friendly people...That guy possibly saved my life..
I had some good times riding that XT-500, good times.
Was going through some pics the other day... and found these... one is of me on the XT, the other is a Suzuki GS750 ( I think) that I bought later to ride on the streets.... the XT was way to uncivilized for any sort of long distance travel on paved roads...
friend of mine borrowed it. 1 week, 2weeks, 3weeks... crap guess I need to go get it. It was sitting in the corner of his shop, no rear fender. I asked "What happened to the fender?" He said "got nocked over in the shop". Later on had drinks with some rider friends & told them about my bike having no fender, hilarity ensued "guess not he kicked it over, let it warm up & took off , twisted the throttle and it immediately shot straight up in the air" ... fender was bent but still there. However on the 3rd time no fender and he loaded it up... it had very linear and predictable power, it just didn't stop when you thought it would
