Poker Night?
crap. i did a lot of work this summer. put out some fires, and more importantly prevented many fires. i just got invited by management to join their game. seriously..i dont gamble. two reasons: i suck..and i tend to go overboard (addicted)..no three reasons..add..i suck.
sounds fun tho..cigars, booze..talking crap about my coworkers.. ![]() it might be nice to be "inner circle". my other coworkers never get invited. why cant it be shotgun/skeet/trap night? you guys play regularly?

Sucking might be the best "skill" you can bring to their game- management does not want to be beat by a subordinate; losing might help you up the advancement ladder.

Go you will have fun and probably do well the first few times. I play in a regular game and every time we get a new person, especially one that does not
play a lot it throws all the regulars off trying to figure just what you are doing. If the buy in isn't too much just consider it an investment in your career.

Depends on the stakes, if you can afford to lose 20 bucks and get some serous non workplace ass kissing in, why not?

Inviting somebody with a gambling problem is akin to asking a recovering alcoholic out for a few drinks. Thing is, the non boozer can get club soda with a twist...what can a recovering gambling addict do?

If you have a possible addiction problem, just either decline or say you'll come along for the social part and tell them why (up front) you don't want to be dealt a hand. It's not something to be ashamed of and might demonstrate self control, which could be a good thing.

In my pre self employment days I got to attend a few of my the owners games. They kept track of money on a pad that was carefully guarded. Most guys had 4 digit balances one way or the other. My net worth was probably 1/50 of the rest of the table but let me tell you when you get to play poker with guys that actually are there to play it is great fun. The collegiate gathering to smoke cigars and tell dirty jokes are nice but good poker against smart people is a whole nother thing.
I say give it a try and read up on the game. If they're doing the cigar thing they probably suck too and you'll fit right in. And you will most certainly get opportunities you would not otherwise get. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Too rich for my blood ($20 a hand). I still go over and have a beer with the guys just to socialize.

There was an underground game at the ad agency I used to work for. Lots of sr managment and other higher level guys would attend. It was a good way to get close to guys that I normally wouldn't have easy access to.
Id go, always had a good time. Dont get wasted and be a gracious loser.

How frequent are the games? Once a month a hundred bucks - heck go and enjoy yourself. Take a stake that you can afford and that is worth the comaraderie and and go for it. If you don't want to commit that much time and money to personal entertainment, then decline. This is a situation where you are in or you are out. You are either a regular or you are an outsider. If it's a weekly game, you really have to be committed. Sucks, but that's the way of men.

Played monthly with a local group. Low pots. Did Texas holdem. Usually $10 buy in for 1000 chips with one rebuy until half way thru. Winner usually takes about $100. Then do a quick game with $5 buy in for 500 chips. Never had anyone win both games.
Host of the game got 1 free buy in and $10 from the pot to pay for refreshments. One of the guys worked for Budweiser and brought enough free beer for everyone. Took a while to get the reputation of not being able to tell what the heck I had or would bet on. After that could win every 3rd night. After a couple of years the poker night changed to just a chance for everyone to get drunk. Most of those enjoying the poker aspect including myself dropped out.

I play crib, poker, pool and shuffleboard every Thursday night with the same group of guys. We play Calgary Crib (with the extra card) for $1 for high hand and $5 a game. Poker is $1 a hand and one $0.25 raise. Pool and shuffleboard is $2 a game. It's not about the money, it's about a group of friends getting together for the last 36 years. We started in Sept of 1980. The taunts, long running jokes and general silliness that occurs is a result of the long term friendships.
Being invited is a bonus in a work environment. Go and check it out. If the stakes are too high say thanks but no thanks and then set up a skeet/trap night and invite the inner circle to join you at the range.

If co workers discover you play poker with management... don't be surprised if a few bricks are thrown at you when you are not looking...

Was invited to a work group poker night. Was told there is an amount of money that just floats around between the guys in the group. Sometimes you don't. Won, and the games switched. 21, dice, etc. Kept winning. Seemed like couldn't lose. Walked away with a HUGE personal check. Was asked back once, didn't go and never cashed the check.

Vash - I'll offer the dissenting opinion: If you know you have a potential problem from past experience with gambling, then please politely decline. Offer a truthful explanation if you think you can do so without creating trouble for yourself (not everybody will understand and some may become judgmental). Sacrificing your well-being to help climb the corporate ladder isn't worth it.
