Indy 500

A lot of nasty crashes in buildup to the 500. Hinchcliffe in particular had a nasty leg injury. The write up (accident) sounds gruesome. He`s out for this race for sure.

Watched some of the practice. Nasty when you get airborne at 230 MPH! (and have no control)

Helio became a Heliocopter after his car went backwards.

Seems like the wings on wings on wings on wings approach didn't go over that well. Look for some kind of aero flap installed (similar to NASCAR) to prevent the cars from taking off when they go backwards. Roof flap - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I just want to see a good close race.

Kind of reminds me of the weekend leading up to Senna's death. Yes, I know no one has died in practice, but the cluster of similar accidents is concerning. The good news is it seems the sanctioning body has taken appropriate steps.

Too fast. Seriously. There is a limit at which the driver will be properly protected. This sheet is just NUTS now. Maybe I am just getting old.

I disagree. They've gone faster that that. The problem is someone screwed up the design testing of the aero of these cars and there is an inherent flaw when they get turned around.

They were going faster 20 years ago on (I would guess) inferior tire technology. The problems are apparently inherent with IndyCars.

I don't know. But what I'm reading about this is that these guys don't have a clue of what this, or any car will do at 230 MPH. This race series is a work in progress. They brought a new set of wings and aero devises to this years race, but they never drove those cars on any oval, much less the 500 track. I hope it's a nice clean race. But as the 2 Pesnske drivers said, "these cars are too easy to drive". Hmm~

Agreed. An impaling suspension upright is what did in Senna. Hinchcliffe is lucky to be alive.

Forget having a "good" race. Let's just have a safe one.

Air IRL.....
Arie Luyendyk qualified in 1996 at 237mph(second day-20th position)......in a Reynard chassis.....Hand me down from CART.
irl's been flying cars for a lot of years...nothing new....
remember Mario's big adventure on the loop-de-loop at Indy a few years ago.
Piss poor chassis design by Dallara. And bolt on aero bits that weren't tested but still mandated???
Too bad about Hinch, he's a good kid.
I truly hope for a safe race, but would not sit below row 20................or 30
'cuz one of these days they're gonna stick one in the stands.

They need to quit screwing around with all this newfangled crap and go back to the late 60's rulebook. Back when you had to actually drive the car. Just use present-day tech to make the structure safer.

One more thing... they can go back to a black and white TV broadcast, too. Watch TV like a real man.

Where's Chris Economaki when you need him?

I'm guessing they didn't run them in the wind tunnel backwards.

When Castroneves got backwards, the air got under the aero kit and lifted him up like (as previously stated) a helicopter.

If that is true, then fire the clowns that didn't do proper testing. These cars get sideways and backwards when traction is lost at the ovals.

As I said, I think someone screwed up. Kind of like when the Mars probe was toast because someone forgot to convert from English to Metric? I think the wind tunnel testing wasn't done properly.

Clowns? Seriously?
This sort of knife edge stability crops up each time the rules get changed to slow the cars and the aero folks go looking for a new advantage.
I would submit that one does not test for running in reverse. Yes, the cars sometimes get sideways or even backwards, but if you are trying to maximize the speed on the straights and the cornering force, you're not likely to also try to make a car that remains glued to the track at 200 mph pointed in the wrong direction.

Best

Ugh. Couldn't stand Paul Page. He'd just jibber jabber to jibber jabber. He'd be blissfully talking away about the sponsor's colors on the livery of a car when there'd be something major happening on-track.
