Mediteranean boat people
So what do you guys make of what's going on in the med ?
On the one hand, people displacede by war, violence, no prospects whatsoever... On the other hand, packing into boats and blackmailing europe into saving them, or else look like monsters... Is that the future of immigration ? |

the Euro's are tired of it..
especially the Italians... as for seeking a better life.. BS..the current wave brought to light... that the towlies found out there where Christians on board the ferries / boats.. they rounded them up.. and tossed them into the sea... man, woman, child..didn't matter.. then 'washed ' ashore seeking asylum.. I'm having a hard time blaming anyone but the boat owners/operators and then any adult who gets on the boat after it's been loaded to capacity. Italy should turn them all away. Let Albania take in their Muslim brethren.

I see both sides and there is no easy answer. Italy is strapped financially. I was in Sicily last November and it's a huge issue there.
On this latest disaster - did I read correctly: 700-900 people in a 66 ft boat? I was on a 58 ft fishing boat as a summer high school job. I can't believe that is possible?

Australia understands how to deal with boat people better than most countries.

People are fleeing north Africa anyway they can. I feel sorry for everyone involved. The only solution I see are new leaders in N. Africa who put economic development ahead of religion and self aggrandizement, but I don't see that happening.

In 1979 I was on board the CGN35 and we pulled 260 Vietnamese people off a hand made wooden boat, in the South China Sea, about 30 feet long. Had a small outboard motor and it had run out of fuel a week earlier and they were drinking sea water and eating rice cakes for over two weeks. Their "leader" said about 15 had died, mostly old people he said. As noted this has been happening for a long time and will continue to as long as there are "bad" places that are next to a sea or ocean. Maybe I am getting old but there seems to be only one way to stop it and that is not by the rescue method??!!

That's what I don't get. You can't let them drown, obviously. But if you rescue them (at great cost), you are encouraging and rubber-stamping the process for the next wave. At that point you might as well send them airplane tickets, it might be cheaper than search & rescue boats and helicopters, seriously. So what do you do? It's not like European countries can afford to care for another continent (most medical/social coverage is bankrupt, heck some entire countries are bankrupt).... What is being done with those folks after they rescue them?

Well I have a hard time blaming people who are fleeing a situation where the people with guns apparently have no organized opposition and lines up anyone who doesn't fall lockstep in their ideology in Orange jump suits for mass executions. I mean, what choice do these boat people have?
The proper response by the international community would be to restore order in the places that are producing such desperate immigrants. But that takes political will, which is in short supply these days. |

no disrespect MRM..
but that sounds like the spiel from the top UN loon.. the international comm. give me a break.. billions of $ & Euro's have been dumped into those holes and what.. most folks are still barefoot and the money ends up in Switzerland.. take'm back... because it won't be long before they wish they had.. Divide them up between Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE. They've got a few bucks to support them.

How's the welfare system working here at home? Fixing other peoples' countries for them will work just as well, creating another cycle of dependency, another one we can't afford.
The only way to stop immigration is to make it harder than revolution.

the best and most humane thing we could do is see that every religious and ethnic minority in the region gets an Ak and a 1000 rounds of ammo. give them maps to the oil fields and tell them to call us when they've seized control. anything else is just jerking off into the wind.

They come with no identity whatsoever. We have no idea who they are or their motives. But, they have all paid a handsome sum to get on that boat. Most of that money was from ill-gotten gains such as robbery and murder. In fact I remember some time ago an interview with a 16 year old kid that claimed he had robbed and killed over 60 people to get enough money to buy his passage.

They're human beings... And at the risk of being ostracized,
I believe all human beings have a right to shelter, clean water, adequate medical care and a safe Environment. If WE all had those 4 things most of the worlds problems would be solved. --------------------------------------------------------- Why is it so hard for us to understand this?
