Microsoft you crafty little devils !

I powered up my Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 this morning to cruise the net as it's an off Friday for me. Then I noticed something new in the Icons in the toolbar at the lower right hand corner. What's this I thought ? I ran my cursor over this new item and it says " Get Windows 10 "..........is Windows 10 already available ? After using my mother in laws new computer with Windows 8 I know I don't want anything to do with that. So is anyone using 10 ? Good, bad, better, worse than 7 ? I am fine with 7 no issues for me.

That notification came with the latest update.
You can apply for upgrade now.
The release is in July.

The upgrade will be free of charge the first year for Win7 and Win8 users.
Also there will be no more versions of Win. Win10 will be updated and optimized "forever".

I don't know about 10 but my Lenovo laptop with 7 crashed last week. Picked up a new Dell with 8, I hate it.

Holger 06-05-2015 02:46 AM

Then just wait and upgrade to Win10. Win10 should be a good mix between XP, Win7 and Win8.

Holger thanks for the comments. How do you know about 10 being the last version to come out ? Not doubting you just curious. Interesting that it will be free. Hopefully 10 will be a winner because 8 is awful in my opinion !

I read about it all the time.
Maybe they will change theire mind, but for now it will be one version with minor and major updates.

Why Microsoft Announced Windows 10 Is 'The Last Version Of Windows' - Forbes

Microsoft Says Windows 10 Will Be the Last OS Upgrade You'll Ever Need

Sounds like the Apple model.

Nickshu 06-05-2015 04:13 AM

I seriously doubt my 3 year old laptop with Windows 7 32 bit is going to run well with Windows 10. After the Windows 8 debacle I'll wait to see what 10 is like first.

Porsche-O-Phile 06-05-2015 04:57 AM

I have a license of Windows 7 "Professional" or whatever the super-duper one is (runs very nicely as a virtual machine under Parallels on my Mac...). Win 10 is a free upgrade? Seriously? There's got to be a catch - nothing from Microsoft is ever "free".

I probably will need a new version of Parallels now too in order to run it I'm guessing - *sigh*

ledhedsymbols 06-05-2015 05:36 AM

My wife wanted windows 8 on our latest machine. I hate it, I well and truly hate it. Nothing is where I think it should be. I know its been beat to death, but I'm going to try Win 10 and if it sucks I'm going back to Win 7 pro. I don't have time or desire to learn an all new OS, and GUI. I need evolution, not revolution. Look how well it's worked out for Porsche...

I like to keep my desk top simple.

Well that doesn't sound good.

Maybe it's just me, but I really do not like the always in flux OS code model. It is so unpredictable with what will stop working in the future. For example, my Surface Pro (Win8.1) no longer did the WiFi app show Ad hoc networks. --and had me writing a little batch file work-around, to make the computer see my phone as a hot-spot. :-\

In general, MSFT takes away lower-level user control with each new OS. Sounds like I'll be keeping even more old computers to support the legacy stuff. yay, progress.

I wonder when they'll start calling it Windows 365 . . . because that's likely how often (days) their new OS will demand the user give up some money, or the OS. yay, progress.

Just get Oracle's VirtualBox if you just need to run Windows without any bells and whistles. Works ok for me.

YMMV

If a new car ran on Win8, it would run out ta gas B4 you figured out how to shut it off.

I'm using Windows 10 Technical Preview and I really like it. And I'm a Mac guy normally.

Rick V 06-06-2015 12:42 AM

I hope 10 is decent, I am running Vista and I love it but I have a feeling when 10 hits full time I am going to lose support for Vista and have to upgrade. My laptops have more than enough to run 10 but I like what I have, oh and I am not a fan of change

Me, too. Been running Tech Preview for a few months in a virtual machine on my iMac. When the time comes, I'll probably upgrade my Win7 VM which I really only use to run Quicken.

Microsoft *says* that it's designed to run well on existing Win7 hardware, noting that some advanced features might not be available. That's a different mindset from previous releases where they typically said something like, "well, it'll technically run on older hardware, but it'll be too slow to use."

I'm no MS (nor Apple) fanboy but I think MS has actually taken their "we know what's best for you" attitude down a notch and is listening to its end users, especially in the commercial world.

What I really want is an OS that doesn't get in the way of me doing my work. Win10 seems to fulfill that requirement for now. Didn't take long to figure out how to navigate around in it.

Joeaksa 06-07-2015 06:50 PM

What they do not tell you is that the upgrade removes some of the Win 7 features and programs. Do some homework first...

hardflex 06-08-2015 05:45 AM

Personally, I'm sorta "teched out". How much of these so called 'improvements' are really new ways to sell you something else, or eavesdrop on your interests and share them with the world. What used to be a devious hacker is now embraced as a business plan. Then you have to pay for programs to protect your data but some of those are doing the same thing. My google chrome on my fastest computer has gotten so slow from trying to get the content for the advertising boxes I end up closing the page before I see what I wanted to see. I just got popped a hundred bucks to renew my Norton subscription.

My smart phone is a tool to deliver more 'advertising' to me, and it has it's own set of 'protection' programs. It's an amazing piece of technology but truth is, it's a lousy phone, which is why I have it. If you don't think so, give it to your parents or grandparents to use

Radio and TV have so much advertising they're not even usable anymore. I see the internet going the same way. I've had just about enough.

Rant over.

I'm not so sure about that. Office 2013 has this "typing animation" feature that has absolutely no redeeming value and is annoying as hell. Somewhere, a team of people came up with this idea, designed it, implemented it, and shipped it, apparently with no thought to how it would impact the user.
