A guy I use to work with is sold on Belize, he's owned a condo there for yrs. plans on retiring there next yr.
I have read some nice stuff about Portugal.
For me of course the weather has be great like Maui.
Other than that I want infrastructure, safe water and food.

Is this Australia you're talking about? Where do you guys get that idea? We can own and keep guns we just can't carry them to the supermarket. Nor can we have M16's and ****. My oldest son just got his license and is buying a 9mm and a rifle to go pig shooting with.

Southern Spain could be good. I hear there are some expat communities there. I stayed in Portugal for a few weeks, a little place called Cascais and like it very much. I have a friend working there now who says he'll never come home. The is a NATO facility there - lots of interesting people from all over the world.

Southern Spain has several British expat communities with some Yankees mixed in. I have a friend living there and he loves it. He never learned Spanish. He said all the local businesses are English friendly due to the high population of brits. Similar weather to California. I could see that if retirement was squeezed.

Samoa
It's not the stereotypical tropical paradise people might imagine based on tourist brochures but if you scratch the surface there is so much beauty to be found there in the people and the culture.
